SSX Iconic Terrain Blog #1 : Fingers, Canyons, Crevasses

With still seven months to go until the game ships in January, we still have a lot of noise to make and continue here with the first of five blogs from Art Director Dave Taylor who describes some of the Iconic Terrain the team have created to ‘SSXify’ the landscapes the team has to work with. Though subtle in the environments, in order to own the planet, you’ll need to know how best to tackle each. This week Dave describes with concept art how Fingers, Canyons, and Crevasses can be managed by those looking to get the ultimate edge in the game.
Fingers: Nature has occasionally managed to present a steeplechase of organic platforms where only the pioneers venture. You want that shortcut? You’d better be up for the challenge. These will test your jump accuracy to the full, with some unpleasant consequences for those not up to the challenge. Of course, all the veterans will be able to use these natural phenomenon to explore new areas AND look good doing so! It’s an almost perfect opportunity to string together your best set of tricks and grinds while newbies take the long way around.
Canyons: Mother Nature’s blockbuster creation which brought fame to the notorious Evel Knieval and tempted ambitious daredevils seeking glory. We wanted to indulge in the opportunities these gaping chasms would offer the player. The casual rider will find the rubble strewn base their home, dodging rocks and tricking off the deep snow banks. The veteran will chase giant scores gained from leaping across the chasm at opportune moments while hugging the challenging upper ledges. During a race, upper and lower levels offer their own strategic prospects as well. Choose well though, since sometimes the only way is down!
Crevasses: Sometimes it pays to dive into these narrow valleys deep into the ground. It may offer a shortcut for those who seek a challenge to their wingsuit skills! We don’t promise it’ll be an easy ride however – keep your eyes peeled for oncoming rock formations and opportunities to flick back to the surface a good few seconds and a few thousand points ahead of the competition. No one said gliding would be safe!

SSX Music DLC Announcement
With your feedback in mind, the SSX dev team worked hard on the upcoming Mt. Eddie & Classic Characters DLC to bring back the classic SSX experience. They wanted the DLC to have the same feel as classic SSX titles – hence, Mt. Eddie was born; an SSX TRICKY inspired mountain with billboards and fireworks and more.

Elise, Kaori and Zoe. These are not just the names of some of the most beloved women in SSX history, but some of the most popular characters we’ve had in the game full stop. These ladies have proven to be able to carve up the mountain as good as any of the men and they’ve shredded their way into our hearts.
