Defy Reality. Own the Planet.
Here is the latest edition in the SSX Character Inspiration Blog Series written by Assistant Producer Reese Savidis, focusing on Ty and Griff.
The idea for Ty was born out of many discussions Sean and I had around the idea of a Big Mountain-type of rider in the same vein as someone like Nate Logan. We loved what Nate represented to SSX but wanted this re-launch of the franchise to have more of an international flavor.
We decided that our character, Ty, should hail from an area of the world that has snowboarding in its DNA and agreed that Norway was precisely the place. But simply assigning a region of the world to a character wasn’t enough; if Ty was going to live and breathe, he needed to represent something bigger.
It was on one of our routine car rides home from the studio that Sean and I hit on the idea that Ty should be a snowboarding test-pilot of sorts. We decided that even though Ty was not a part of SSX legacy, it would be fun to imagine him as the guy that would ride all the classic SSX tracks back in the day before the “stars” of SSX hit them in competition – just to test them out and make sure they were fun and SSX-worthy. Thinking of an undocumented past where Ty would have ridden the Tokyo Megaplex or Snow Jam was a very cool notion to play with.
And this concept, we decided, was exactly why Ty was approached by SSX to join them in their adventure around the globe to ride and conquer the planet: his roots in snow-sport culture, his skill and nerve with a snowboard and his “imagined” connection to the SSX of yore made him a perfect addition to the cast of the new SSX.
The idea of bringing Griff back into the SSX fold came to Sean and I had around the concept that we needed someone, a tangible antagonist, for Team SSX to go up against as they were traversing the globe, seeking out the deadliest mountains and sickest lines.
We loved the idea of a grown-up Griff with a huge chip on his shoulder wanting to exact some long-gestating revenge on SSX. But that alone wasn’t enough. If he was going to pose a challenge to the likes of Team SSX, Griff had to be a force to be reckoned with on a snowboard; he needed to be the best pure rider in the world!
The character of Griff also had to represent everything that SSX opposed; all the reasons why they decided to take snowboarding back to its roots with the Deadly Descent tour: corporate sponsors, fanfare, the glitz and flash. So we took the route of designing Griff to be the ultimate “corporate sell-out” complete with high-tech over-endorsed clothing and gear, boat-loads of cash and an ever present smugness in his character that a fire hose couldn’t drown out.
Some of the most fun we’ve had with our characters was sitting with our Art Director, Ron Bignell, dreaming up this new interpretation of Griff – his direction as an antagonist and what he means to SSX.
