Hello internet, it’s me again, Dragon Age Legends producer Ethan Levy.  After the announcement of Dragon Age Legends for Facebook, one of the most frequent questions we’ve gotten on Twitter, Facebook and the Bioware Forums is, “What ever happened to the next chapters of Dragon Age Journeys?”

We started working on Journeys about two years ago with two of my favorite people in the world, the remarkably talented designer/programmer Dan Stradwick, maker of Monster’s Den, and the equally talented animator Adam Phillips of Bitey Castle fame.  Dan’s vision set an ambitious goal for Journeys, and as development progressed, we realized that it would take more than just the three of us to launch the game.

We added support from Mytheria creator Andrew Sega and the growing rosters of our internal team.  Even with more support, as the launch of Dragon Age: Origins neared, it was clear we were simply building too much game.  The answer was to break the game into three chapters, ensuring we had time to deliver the polished AAA browser experience we set out to build instead of shipping a longer game in an unpolished, buggy state.

After launch, we continued development on Journeys as well as the robust Flash game platform - including microtransactions, multiplayer and in-game friends lists - we wanted to launch it on.  This was again, a hugely ambitious undertaking and we had been developing Journeys for around 14 months.  Dan and Andrew wanted to get back to indie development, and the studio pushed the pause button on the development of Journeys in favor of the social network enabled Legends.

Journeys/Legends programmer Ben Humberston and I still put in a few hours here and there on Journeys, most notably during a recent studio wide 24 Hour Hack’a’thon.  We are about 80% complete, and I personally feel a heavy obligation to finish the game.  I want to finish the game for you, the fans who loved the game we put out before Origins’ release.  I want to finish the game for my studio, because I know it will be another proud moment to release a AAA browser game based on a much loved franchise.  Most of all, I want to finish the game for Dan and Andrew, because it would be a great disservice not to share their incredible work with all the gamers eager for another journey.

So yes, we plan on finishing the Journeys.  We just can’t say when that will be.  For the moment, we must focus on Legends, because once again we have the launch of another hotly anticipated Bioware masterpiece looming, and need to put every ounce of energy we can into fulfilling our goal of making a true AAA social game for gamers.  In the mean time, make sure you sign up for the beta so you can be one  of the first to experience Legends.

Thanks for posting this! I played the first installment of Journeys and because of it have wanted to pick up Dragon Age Origins! However, download access expired June 30, 2010 for unlocks and now that the Ultimate Edition is out and I have money to purchase the game I am hesitant to do so. Will future installments of Dragon Age have the same problem? Where the marketing campaign and retail editions work against each other? Thanks and good luck with Legends!

Well I hope items are not locked out, I want to kill darkspawn warden for the amulet with all the nice blue runes. I would at least like to bring the game full circle to a final deeproads battle. I have the 3 unlockable items allready, will thier be more or are we just closing this chapter of the story?

Yea, I might play Journeys after Legends. Such a shame that the items are locked out! Whose bright idea was that eh??? I liked the DA2 demo, and I'd love to play DA, people still want the items in this! Make it happen!

Date may expired, but I played it for the first time after that and getting items for DAO still works.

    Dragon Age Legends: Combat Explained

One of the most lauded features of Dragon Age: Origins was its tactical combat system, which encouraged players to plan ahead and make interesting choices during battle. Indeed, although the system ran in real-time, the player could set a number of triggers that paused combat, to give time for deciding which skills to use and against which enemies. This feature allowed some to play Origins as almost a turn-based game that emphasized smart tactics over fast reflexes.

The Dragon Age Journeys Flash game built in parallel with Origins brought elements of the franchise to an actual turn-based game, in which battles played out on a hex-based grid. For the new Dragon Age Legends Facebook game, we built on top of what worked within the Journeys system (which itself was based on Daniel Stradwick’s Monsters’ Den Flash RPG).   Be Legendary! About That Phat Loot...

For Dragon Age fans, one of the most exciting parts of Dragon Age Legends is the ability to earn unique unlock* items for your hero in Dragon Age 2.  We have collaborated with BioWare to develop a set of five items you can unlock in Dragon Age 2 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.  We’ll let you know how you can earn each of these items in the future, but for now we wanted to explain a little bit about how these items were designed.

    Staying True To BioWare

Hey there internet, it’s me again, your friendly neighborhood producer Ethan Levy.  After announcing Dragon Age Legends for Facebook, one of the things we’ve heard the most curiosity about is the story.  BioWare’s mission is to deliver the best story-driven games in the world, and when collaborating with them on a game for one of their franchises, our studio feels it is our duty to stay true to that vision.  When we released Dragon Age Journeys, one of my greatest fears would be that fans would say it wasn’t a true BioWare game; living up to the mantle of delivering the best story-driven games in the world is a scary task to take on.  Of the many things that make me happy about Journeys, the warm reception the story received is one of the things I am most proud of.
