FIFA 23 | Pitch Notes - Title Update #2

October 2022

The Pitch Notes

Title Update #2 (TU #2) is now available for all versions of FIFA 23 and it includes updates to Ground Pass ball velocity, Chip Shot accuracy, and the effectiveness of Standing Tackles. In this Pitch Notes article, we’re digging a bit deeper into these changes to let you know about their impact in-game as well as our philosophy behind them.

And if you want to take a look at the complete notes for TU #2, be sure to check them out on the EA SPORTS FIFA Tracker.

Let’s jump right in.

Ground Pass Ball Velocity

TU #2 introduces the following change:

- Increased the ball velocity for all Ground Passes.

Football styles can vary drastically from pitch to pitch and between teams, but one common thread across the entire sport is that everyone wants to be efficient and effective with their passing. To better reflect this in-game, we’ve increased how fast a ball will travel following a Ground Pass.

In general, Ground Passes are about 5% faster after TU #2, and our intent with this change is to enable players to have more confidence in their passages of play and to be able to go for that risky defense-splitting pass when the situation calls for it.

Here’s a comparison video of a Ground Pass before and after TU #2, using our internal testing ground.

As you can see, the difference between two passes is subtle but noticeable. We don’t want passing to be too slow or too fast, our goal is for it to feel versatile enough for a variety of different situations.

Chip Shot Accuracy

TU #2 introduces the following change:

- Increased accuracy of Chip Shots.

Generally, Chip Shots are more likely to send the ball closer to the center of the goal after TU #2. Previously, we saw that Chip Shots could miss the goal in inauthentic ways, and we want to maintain the viability of chipping the keeper without making drastic changes to this shot type.

Here’s how 100 Chip Shots could have looked like before TU #2. The blue lines indicate a shot that would be on target and the red lines indicate a shot that would be off target.

Now let’s take a look at these same 100 Chip Shots after TU #2.

As you can see, the shots are grouped closer to the center of the goal. They’re not necessarily all going to the very center because that’s not where the player was aiming, but the shot type itself is more accurate in this scenario.

Standing Tackle Effectiveness

- Improved the likelihood of Standing Tackles winning the ball back.

We want to ensure that Standing Tackles continue to be a viable option when attempting to win the ball back, so we’ve adjusted how defenders perform Standing Tackles.

With TU #2, we’ve reduced how much a defender can knock the ball away from the ball carrier when performing a Standing Tackle. The intent with this change is for successful Standing Tackles to produce cleaner results in a variety of situations, with the defender winning the ball back instead of the ball falling into contested space or to the attacking side.

Here’s an example of how a Standing Tackle could have looked like before TU #2:

And here’s how a Standing Tackle can look like after TU #2:

As can be seen in this clip, the defender is able to win the ball back with a successful tackle and does not end up giving the ball to another player on the opposing team. Note that this is just one example to highlight the change we’ve made. Tackling situations can vary greatly depending on player input and what’s actively happening on the pitch, but in general, this change looks to improve the likelihood of successful Standing Tackles resulting in the ball being won back.

Thank you everyone for checking out the Title Update #2 Pitch Notes for FIFA 23. We hope this has given you some more insight into this TU, and be sure to check out the EASF Tracker for more updates from the team.
