Available Now: Get The Newest Version Of Origin

Today's beta opt-in update to the Origin client introduces several community-requested fixes, including a reduced CPU load—something many Battlefield 3 fans have asked for—and an improved DLC download experience.

The 8.6 update brings the first of several changes to the Origin friends list: the hovercard. To see it in action, simply mouse over a friend’s name. If they’ve opted to show their real name (you can change this setting from your profile), their username will roll up to reveal it. This feature works both in-client and in-game.

We also want to thank you for all of the great feedback and suggestions you’ve given us over the last week. While this update can’t implement all of your suggestions at once, we will continue to work on them in future releases.

Please note: The initial release of 8.6 is a beta opt-in. If you would like to download the beta version of the client (and opt in to future beta releases), you will need to turn on that option in your settings. Here's how:
     1. Launch the Origin client and log in to your account.
     2. Click on the gear icon and select "Settings.".
     3. On the General tab, check "Update to the pre-release version if available."

Origin 8.6 Release Notes

  • Fixed several issues with the DLC download system, including one that was causing users to time out before completion.

  • Added hovercards to the Origin friends list. You can now mouse over a friend’s name to pop up their real name. Users who have hidden their real names will remain hidden.

  • Added release dates to all DLC available for pre-order.

  • Fixed several issues that were causing Origin to crash.

  • Reduced the client’s CPU load.

It has that, you just have to enable cloud storage. It's actually right underneath the optin setting they mentioned. Just turned it on myself.

EA is a virus that is ruining gaming and Origin is nothing more than one of its rotten little trolls plaguing the Internet.

Why does origin exist at all, you are not steam, you will never be steam, standalone, steam, or nothing. Why does BF3 have to be so good.

Thanks for forcing me to your store everytime I load Origin, I want to load too my games not your stupid store! Is this to replace the popup spam that you forced on us recently? Origin is a Steam clone FAIL! EA don't treat their customers with 1/10th of the respect that Valve do!

Just a suggestion... Could you guys try to get a screenshot engine in this thing like Steam has?? That's my main problem with the client, and pretty much my only one besides just some little problems i have with the in-game browser. Get on the screenshot thingy and I'll be back to being happy as a clam. Also to all the people flaming Origin... Origin is not Steam. It was never meant to be. Quit raging at the new guy and give it time to develop.

Screw the piddly updates. How about being able to ******* speak in game like the now $5.00 game left for dead2?? Why do we have to make friends, then join them in a speak server then join them in a game then join their side...if we even can. How about a standard team talk for either the squad or another easy ingame configuration. I swear it's a no brainer but here it is. Thousands of guys talking to themselves saying "look out behind you, he's gonna knife you!" but no one can hear them. FIX IT!

Hell yes!!! You would think that with all of the brainpower that they have they could easily incorporate in-game chat.

With the amount of trolling and whining in the chatbox, I'm happy they didn't implement a talk function in BF3. I'm happy using TS for coms, so i can choose who to talk to and don't have to listen to people i don't (want to) know.

Great update, it sure is a start of things to come hopefully. @CLONEghost: Apparently there is a whole group of steam fanboys that just go around the internet posting anti-EA stuff. Steam fanboys need to get over themselves. Origin is here to stay.

People also get bored when EA fanboys talk about how _amazing_ Origin is even when it seems to screw up every few minutes- and still hogs resources.

no one here is speaking how amazing Origin is. I think it is a good platform that needs further improvements and constructive criticism is more than welcome. Asking for constructive feedback and not whines is not being a fanboy is just being rational

I don't think any of you understand that EA never had Origin (or it's previous version "EA Download Manager) until games with multiple updates and online capabillities started becoming the standard. I Origin and Steam are two different applications for two different companies (correct me if i'm wrong), if one was to become any more like the other, there would be copyright issues.

I think you guys are really going the right way! Origin gets better with every update and i like that it is NOT like Steam! But you should still improve a lot how you can access DLCs. All the Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 DLCs are not available in Origin... Why shall i download the game with Origin and then buy and download the DLCs I want from the Bioware Social Network Page??? Please improve that!

I agree they should also create an unified system of points for DLCs purchasing something like Origin Points or EA Points so that we do not shops for billions of different points for different games. The other options is just to ditch the point system altogether and just have cash prices for DLCs packs

That is a publisher issue- Bioware wasn't happy with steam's TOS when it came to DLCs. A lot of other DLCs are available on steam and are much easier to download than they are with Origin. The only reason that Origin is able to have the DLCs is because all the games on it are EA published games- making EA able to manage everything.

Also all the Sims 3 Games get really annoying when you have a big library. You should think of name the expansio and stuff packs as DLCs. Actually they are nothing more than just additional downloadable content. if you click on play with any of the 13 games in the library, you'll be taken everytime to the same game/launcher (which is - since we have Origin - unnecessary, too)! So why don't you pack them as DLC on the detailed info page of the main game so that your library gets tidied up a lot?

For the ones who talk about Bad about Origin and says that Steam is better is full of SH**. Lets see what happins when you get your Account hacked and all the games you purchesed is gone by some one from somewhere half way across the world, and you have to wait about a month and a half to hear somthing back from Steam. No Number to contact Support and speak live to a real person instead just sit and wait for a month to go by before you even get a response.Shure Steam came first but it took someone like Origin to perfect it. Keep up the good work Origin. Customer for life.

Actually, Origin is Better than what u talk... i have back-up of EA games on Origin, which is actually i purchased from Steam.. So i share my account with my friend and play together (it was priceless).. also, when my account on Steam got hijackked, it took the whole 3 week for the support to be respond.... unlike Origin, i got problem with my Backup game BF2BC (i actually purchased it from Steam), but they responded it as the next day after i send the Request.. 1 more thing, My Steam Account got hijackked along with my emails... then i recovered my emails, but all the mails in the inbox were deleted, so i have no idea to tell my Serial Code to process the Request... it was all thankfully to Origin, they have data of my Back-up games, and their serial code... without it, maybe i had lost about $200 worth account, and never regained it

You do realize there is steam guard which protects against this very thing from happening. You cannot log in somewhere else without validating your email. EA is worse than Valve for customer support so you really need to check your facts.
