Maxis: An Update on Facebook Titles

Today we are informing players of the difficult decision to retire some of our Facebook games: The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society.

After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off.  For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising.

EA will continue to deliver popular titles for Facebook, most notably games from PopCap, including Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz and the recently-announced Plants vs. Zombies Adventures.

For players who have enjoyed our games, we will be making a special offer to introduce you to a PopCap game.  You’re a valued fan and we want to make sure you get a smooth transition to PopCap.  More details about that offer will appear in-game soon.

Players with questions about the shutdowns can find FAQs linked here: The Sims SocialSimCity Social and Pet Society.  The titles will go offline on June 14, 2013.

On behalf of the teams who developed these games, thank you for playing.

This makes me extremely sad :( Pet Society and Sims Social were my two favorite games. I have invested many hours and made many friends through my adventures in these games. I wish you would not do this. Please, please reconsider?

The way you guys put it makes it sound as if players "just" stopped playing, and you don't know why. But this isn't true. You know why people stop playing games, and YOU, EA, are to blame. Why? (cont.) Why? When you have deplorable customer service, careless/subpar programming and less-than-capable response to fix the issues caused by said poor coding (and make up to the players for it), you seriously can't expect players to stay. And you can't gamble everything on "brand loyalty"; to do that, you have to prove to be WORTHY of such, something that unfortunately EA hasn't achieved for the last 10 years or so. (cont.)

It's time for you, EA, to acknowledge YOUR failures instead of acting as if you don't know what's going on; recently a response from the current EA CEO about being named "Worst company of America" was published here, and the arrogance and dismissive tone of it shows everything that is wrong with EA as of now. You want to recover your customers, then start catering to your customers instead of just milking them for profits and discarding them when you don't earn enough.

No, I most certainly WILL NOT play any other game EA has anything to do with. 've only stuck in this long as I enjoy Sims. Have NOT enjoyed dealing with your company, or the pathetic excuse for customer service and programming you subject your customers to.There's only one reason players have dropped off. Go look at all the help group posts and add up the number of people that can't play or quit due to issues! I will be sad to see Sims go, but celebrating that I won't have to deal with you, EA.

I highly doubt that the developers are happy about this. Don't Lie EA. The only reason people are leaving is because of how horrible your help desk is. Luckily I've never had to go to the help desk and complain about anything *knocks on wood*

Dear EA, perhaps if you had paid attention to the uncountable feedback given in the forums (I'm talking about TSS specifically, but I suppose pretty much the same is valid for all the others as well), the "number of players and amount of activity" wouldn't have fallen off. Laggy & buggy game engine, flashing popus & toasts, ridiculous amounts of collectibles needed for any single item, quests after quests after quests sweatshop, adding strangers to FB friends... numerous posts about these...

The forums are full of them. And you did nothing about any of these issues. And even now you have the audacity to not only have items for sale for simcash but even advertise them in popups and emails, when you're aware it's all going to be lost in 2 months. You should be setting off fireworks and allow free and unrestricted access to any and all past and present stuff so that we can finish things and at least have something nice to remember - that's the least you could do for your "valued" players when you screw 'em over like this. Instead, you're just living up to that worst company title you earned. Congrats and thank you very much.

What a catch 22....for months I have read the complaints of people TRYING to play your games, have filed a few of my own, and then when they leave because they can't play, you say your numbers have fallen off. Well of course they will.....what do you expect when people can't get into the game. The code is badly written, your "resources" as you call them are lean at best. there never seem to be enough servers for the games to run right. So now what do we do, play stupid games?

You can't close a game like Sim Cityl and Sim Social and expect bejeweled blitz to be a substitute, they are totally different, and in my opinion, those games are stupid. What do you gain, where is the joy? Oh well, in one way this is a good thing, I will NEVER, EVER play any of your games again, in fact, I am done with games on facebook altogether.....after this I realize there is no customer loyalty among you game developers. I will turn my attention to other things.

POPCAP GAMES SUCK! That's why they close down constantly. We don't want to migrate to a new game and I guarantee the community is not going to support EA with it. The sad fact is there are HUGE communities built around the Sims and Simcity and we are completely heartbroken over this, you might as well close down all of your Facebook games at this point as this will be the final straw to break the camels back.

The sad thing about this whole thing is that Playfish put out great games, unfortunately EA swooped in and ruined things. Agreed, having horrible customer service/not being willing to support the games properly is what is bringing this whole thing down around their ears. A note to the folks at Playfish: You did a great job creating games that were different from the rest and I hope that you all move on to working in an environment where your creative skills are appreciated.

Arrogant and incompetent customer service, deaf years and non response from the developing team and the elite untouchable executives who have no first and clue/experience about social games is responsible for drop in number of active users. It looked like whoever is making decisions was on a suicidal path to ensure that The Sims Social and The Simcity Social games are indeed destined for shutdown. It was a systematic plan. Don't blame customers/players for your idiotic decisions and handling.

I love playing SimCity and SimCity Social was the only one I can play on the bus on my MacBook Air after school and the bus ride is over an hour long, at least I can play the new SimCity for Mac when it is released on June 11th, 3 days before SimCity Social closes.

The Sims Social and Sim City Social are THE ONLY online games I play. I have been playing The Sims since it was first launched, I have bought every expansion pack, and when I found out about The Sims Social I opened an exclusive facebook account to play it. I have also played Sim City since the first editions and I love it, when you launched (less than a year ago) Sim City Social I started using the first day and haven't stoped playing.

The Sims Social and Sim City Social are actually better than the original games, I love the quests, and it is really upsetting to see them go, I rarely play the original games anymore, i've been concentratiing my free time on the facebook versions. You guys are really clueless as to what your custumers want.... And I have to agree with what everyone else is saying, sometimes it is really hard to play these games, they have a lot of tecnical issues.
