Thanks for being here with us Jeremy. So what you do here at EA?
I'm a Producer within EA Mobile. I work on games from start to finish on mobile platforms including iPad, iPhone, and Android.
What’s the most difficult part about your job?
One of the most important and often hardest tasks is keeping a team working together and all focusing on a common goal, and then dealing with all of the unexpected problems that come up along the way, and the hard decisions that then have to get made so that the whole project doesn't get derailed.
And could you tell us a little bit about SHIFT 2?
SHIFT 2 Unleashed is the latest Need for Speed title that we're bringing to iPhone and iPad. It's a fast-paced racing game with great cars and awesome tracks.
Did you set any specific goal when you first started on the game?
The goal was to make a top-class racing game for the iPhone and iPad. Being that it’s SHIFT 2 Unleashed, we wanted to focus on high-speed racing, a visceral and engaging driving experience, and provide great competitive action while giving users the opportunity to drive some of the best cars in the world.
Shift 2 is far from the first racing game to be on a mobile platform. What features really make it different and stand out from an average mobile racing game?
There are several things that make SHIFT 2 Unleashed really stand out. First of all, the cars we have in the game are fantastic. We have over 40 cars including the Pagani Huayra, which is exclusive to SHIFT, and we also have several of the actual cars from the Team Need for Speed racing team.
We have some great game modes that provide fun, variety, and depth with Career Mode and the all-new Quick Race Trials. We also use the power of Origin to connect to your friends, and compete against them with our Leaderboard Challenges.
Our all-new Helmet Cam really brings the intensity to driving from inside the cockpit, giving the user a first person, visceral driving experience. Not to mention the other work we've done to make the game handle and drive really well giving the user an awesome sense of speed from the beginning. This makes for a truly high-speed and engaging game.
How is the mobile version different from the console version?
In making the mobile version of a game like SHIFT 2 Unleashed, the goal is to deliver the Shift experience in the best possible way for the platform. At its core this means delivering a fast, fun, and engaging racing game, packed with lots of great cars. We have some similar features to the console product like Helmet Cam, and also really strive to deliver a visceral, first person racing experience. At the end of the day, if you want a fantastic racing experience wherever you are and however you play games, then SHIFT 2 Unleashed is the game for you.
Why do you develop games for mobile platforms? What's interesting or challenging about mobile?
Mobile is a great platform that’s always evolving and changing. One of the best parts is that pretty much everyone has a mobile device, and thus they have a gaming platform. Wherever you are, you can have access to great games. There are also inherent challenges in taking great IP like a Need for Speed game that people are used to experiencing on a console and delivering that great racing experience on a mobile device. Creating a game that mobile gamers will enjoy that is also true to the brand can be challenging at times, but I find that very interesting and ultimately enjoyable.
The video game industry can be pretty demanding. When you’re not making awesome games like Shift 2, what do you play in your spare time?
I've always played tons of games from EA Sports, especially the Madden NFL and FIFA franchises, racing games of course, and I'm a fan of Action/Adventure games like the Uncharted series. Of course, I'm always playing lots of mobile games like Angry Birds, of course, and though it's a bit of a shameless plug, Pictureka for the iPad is a lot of fun as well.
If you could say one thing to motivate people to play Shift 2 in their spare time, what would it be?
If you have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and want great, high-speed racing action, then you should definitely pick up SHIFT 2 Unleashed: start a Career, challenge your friends, and have a blast!
Thanks for your time Jeremy. One last question for you - what’s next for your team?
There are plenty more great games coming out of EA Mobile, so keep your eyes peeled for more fantastic titles!
