THE MAMMOTH TANK

Initial Concept Painting

The Mammoth Tank is the Global Defense Initiative's heavy hitting, thick-armored war-machine. When it was developed, it was so immediately intimidating to Nod that Kane specifically targeted their production facilities to keep them off the battlefield. The two giant tank cannons are its most obvious threat, but it is also armed with rocket pods to deal with smaller targets. The most important aspect of the Mammoth is the extremely heavy armor which provides a level of battlefield resiliency unrivaled by anything seen in the Tiberium Wars.

Architecture Concept

These tanks are great fun to command since their very presence forces enemy commanders to react with everything they have. Mammoths have always served as the knock-out puncher for GDI, smashing enemy armor and structures without mercy. Even infantry had to stand clear, as rockets landing in their proximity could knock them out. The Mammoth's speed wasn't anything to write home about, but it reinforced the underlying philosophy of GDI armor battalion commanders everywhere: "Do you want it done fast, or do you want it done right?"

The Mammoth has gone through a number of engineering redesigns in the decades after its development, but in 2047, GDI has returned to the tried-and-true "supertank" style chassis. The treads and low center of gravity allow the Mammoth to carry extremely heavy weaponry while keeping the basic speed up and vulnerability down. The rocket pods have been retained to support the many different tactics that have arisen over nearly 30 years of combat experience.

Final In-Game Model

Expect to see Mammoths excel during head-to-head armor battles because of their distinct ability to blast through enemy armor and knock hostile structures to the ground. When supported by anti-aircraft vehicles, such as the Firehawk, they command the field. As an escort for Juggernaut artillery, the Mammoth can destroy any enemy fortified position. In general, the Mammoth is the last GDI armor to enter the battle, and the last armor to remain on the field intact.

THE ORCA

Initial Concept Painting

As the Global Defense Initiative's ultimate fast-attack aircraft, the Orca first appeared in the first Tiberium War's ravaged battlefields. It was quick, mean, and armed with air-to-ground rockets. Orcas were a crucial element in hit-and-run attacks, especially in areas of complex terrain. GDI's ground vehicles aren't classically as agile as Nod's, so fast attack fell mainly on the shoulders of the vulnerable yet dangerous Orca.

The Orca's visual design broke new ground. It combined elements of real combat aircraft with imaginative innovations in a unique and futuristic yet believable design. When the Orca acquired a target it would fire rockets at close range, then buzz around to the other side to fire a second salvo. A swarm of Orcas pursuing a vulnerable target was satisfying on a level that real-time strategy had never seen before. In this way it became representative of the original Command and Conquer, which brought with it as much style as it did substance.

Upgrades Concepts

In 2047, the Orca has retained the rockets while gaining enhanced scouting capabilities. The air frame is heavier than that of the first generation Orca, granting increased survivability and the ability to carry a more powerful sensor suite. In response to Nod's penchant for fielding stealth technology, the Orca can activate its radar to scan the immediate area for stealthed units. This allows groups of Orcas to secure flanks and seek out Stealth Tanks and other hidden enemies. Upgraded Orcas carry a sensor probe that fires into the ground to provide detection in a fixed area. Although the technology is new to the field, some pilots have already been reported firing these probes into enemy armored vehicle hulls. This allowed GDI to track the movements of those Nod vehicles until the sensors were disabled by Nod technicians.

Final In-Game Model

Orcas are common to the battlefield and serve as the most versatile and responsive stealth detector. They can respond to flank attacks quickly and don't have to circumnavigate rough terrain to get to the action. Orcas are also armed with powerful rockets that are well suited to anti-ground vehicle action, but can be used against enemy aircraft and structures when needed.
