Electronic Arts continues to ramp up the excitement for gamers: with Christmas fast approaching, it held a November Showcase event at the Matter superclub, in London’s O2. As well as letting attendees get hands-on action with forthcoming titles like Crysis 2, Dragon Age II, Dead Space 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic, the company kicked off proceedings with a press conference packed with announcements.

No press conference would be complete without a first glimpse at a new intellectual property, and that was provided by Rango, a tie-up with Paramount which will see EA publishing the game of the eponymous film. Rango is Paramount’s first feature-length animation, and it takes its name from the star character, a chameleon, who wanders the US/Mexican deserts having Wild West-style adventures. Visually stunning, it also looked pretty amusing; both film and game are due in early March 2011, and the game will come out on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and DS.

    Let’s Be Necromorphs
Few games inspire such feverish anticipation as Dead Space 2, so it was a treat to get a first glimpse at the multiplayer aspect of the horror-adventure game. Visceral Games’ Art Director Ian Milham said: “We’re going to show you gameplay which is only possible in the Dead Space universe: you can play as either humans or necromorphs in four-versus-four online battles.” The prospect of playing as necromorphs is mouth-watering indeed, and you’ll be able to choose between playing as the Pack, a Spinner, a Lurker or a Puker. Milham added: “As a human, you will be part of the Sprawl Security Force, and there will be five objective-based maps.”

    Sport Of Champions
EA Sports fans will be well acquainted with the awesome Fight Night franchise, and it was a joy to get a first look at the next instalment of the boxing game, Fight Night Champion. Gameplay Producer Brian Hayes talked attendees through some of its new features: “There’s a new reflexive blocking mechanism, and over 500 new punch animations. There are real one-punch knockouts, as well as Full Spectrum Punch Control, which offers the most accessible and intuitive punch control to date.”Hayes added that the game’s visuals will be improved, with better boxer likenesses, and what looked like an almost scarily realistic damage system, which allows hyper-realistic touches like boxers’ trunks and the floor of the ring becoming streaked with blood. And he said that the game will also boast a deeper boxer growth and development system, plus a “Prizefighter Economy”. And he tantalisingly mentioned an all-new Champion Mode – but refused to divulge what that would entail.

Player Versus Player In Star Wars
BioWare head honchos Dr Ray Muzyka and Dr Greg Zeschuk both appeared on stage, accompanied by demos of Dragon Age II and Star Wars: The Old Republic respectively. Zeschuk aired the first public showing of The Old Republic’s PvP element, lifting the lid off a Warzone on the world of Alderaan, where the Republic and Empire were battling it out. He asserted that once you decide which side you want to be on, you can take the character you’ve been building up into the PvP action, and added: “Warzones are just one of the ways in which you can experience PvP in Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

Meanwhile, Muzyka showed Dragon Age Origins, a free-to-play Facebook game inspired by the much-loved RPG, which, he said, “Will raise the bar for social games in terms of graphics and accessibility, but will offer core gamers a level of sophistication not yet seen on Facebook.” To find out more, head to www.dragonagelegends.com.

    More Free Battlefield Glory
We all love free stuff, which is why EA General Manager Ben Cousins got a great reception. He unveiled Battlefield Play4Free, the successor to the hugely popular Battlefield Heroes. Battlefield Play4Free has realistic, rather than cartoony, graphics and a first-person viewpoint, unlike Battlefield Heroes. It takes place on the modern battlefield (with Russia and the US in conflict), supports 32 players and combines reworked versions of maps from Battlefield 2 with the weapons , vehicles and character classes from Battlefield Bad Company 2. The beta sign-up will start on November 5, and the closed beta itself will get under way on November 30 – head to www.battlefieldplay4free.com for more info.

As if those announcements weren’t enough, Patrick Lu, Senior Producer at DICE, stepped up to announce that his company is adding expansions to Medal Of Honor’s multiplayer game, including a new, three-round, no-respawn mode called Clean Sweep and another new mode called Hot Zone, in which players vie to achieve control of an area. Those modes will come with a load of new maps – go to www.medalofhonor.com to find out more.
