Nintendo DS Games: Handheld Video Games
From the moment it entered the market, the Nintendo DS quickly became popular with young gamers who saw a new way to play their favourite games. What many did not anticipate was just how popular the handheld device would be with other, more casual gamers. As the diversity of DS owners grew, so did the variety of DS games, from the ever-popular Mario franchise to a wave of skill-polishing trainers and casual games.
DS Games Are for Everyone
While the Nintendo DS uses many of the standard button controls, it also offers one major innovation that broadens its appeal to more casual gamers—the Touch Screen. Players use a stylus to touch the bottom screen, directly interacting with the DS game. Inexperienced gamers find this method of controlling the game less intimidating than the usual myriad of buttons that must be mastered on other gaming devices.
Fun at Your Fingertips
The portability of the handheld DS also helps drive its popularity, making it a favourite among commuters and travelers, while the variety of experiences offers something for everyone. Players on the go will be able to explore the world of Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, in which they battle enemies in an action adventure mode on the top screen, while defeating additional foes and retrieving power-ups from the puzzle world on the touch screen. For animal lovers, LITTLEST PET SHOP gives fans of that beloved brand a chance to expand their collections and see their favorite littlest pets come to life in a video game. Gamers who seek more unusual critters can create and interact with their own creations in SPORE Creatures. And, if it’s mental stimulation that players seek, SCRABBLE and Brain Training for Dummies, among others, can spark the synapses.
As it becomes ever clearer that the Nintendo DS is the handheld device with widest appeal, look for more DS games and applications that will deliver the different experiences that these new gaming consumers desire. From practical trainers and reference guides to puzzle, party, and board games—and, of course, the more traditional adventure and racing games—Nintendo DS games will continue to offer unique gameplay and hands-on fun that anyone and everyone can enjoy!
