The final day of the VBL Grand Finals provided even more shocks and upsets, concluding with Jonny of SC Paderson 07 becoming WO VBL Final Champions 2024
Check out our recap of the Grand Finals below:
Semi-finals
Jonny vs Umut
Jonny may have earned his spot in the Virtual Bundesliga by WOW Grand Final in impressive fashion, but Umut certainly didn’t make it easy for the 18-year-old.
The first leg was an intense game in the early stages as both players seemingly cancelled each other out. However, Umut was able to open the scoring by overloading the right side of the pitch before producing a beautifully chipped cross into the box that was met with a lovely header.
What should’ve been a momentum-shifting goal for Umut, actually became the moment Jonny found his rhythm and got into the game. He pegged his opponent back in the 56th minute by guiding a header home at the near-post, then scored the winning goal in the 80th minute to win the first leg 2-1.
The second leg was more of the same as Jonny quickly scored two goals to make it 4-1 on aggregate. Although Umut nearly staged a late comeback, Jonny was able to seal the victorywhen he scored a wicked trivela shot that went through his opponent’s legs.
Jonny wins 5-3 on aggregate
Marc_LDW23 vs LevyFinn
LevyFinn and Marc_LDW23 had an intense semi-final match that ended up being the first game of the weekend to go to penalties. Unlike the semi-final between Jonny and Umut, this game was filled with goals in the first leg as both players went on the attack.
Marc started the game off hot, making it 3-1 relatively early on. However, Levy was able to stage a comeback that made the crowd rise to their feet in applause. Sadly for him, the euphoria of drawing level didn’t last long as a poor mistake from Levy allowed Marc to take the lead and win the first leg 4-3.
While the first game had goals galore, the second leg was much closer as both players went back and forth, attempting to take advantage of any mistake either made. Luckily for Levy, he was able to score a goal in the second half to make it 4-4 on aggregate, taking the game to penalties where he would defeat Marc 4-3.
LevyFinn wins 4-3 on penalties
Final
Jonny vs LevyFinn
The final between Jonny and LevyFinn was highly anticipated due to both performing amazingly throughout the tournament. However, it was clear from the first leg that Jonny was levels above his opponent.
Jonny asserted his dominance early, maintaining possession and threatening with multiple chances. However, once the first goal went in, the floodgates truly opened and it felt like he would score with every attack, eventually finishing the first leg 6-1.
When you’re competing at such an elite level there’s always a chance for a dramatic comeback. Sadly for Levy, Jonny gave him zero opportunities to stage anything close to one, even adding two more goals to the scoreline for good measure.
It was a truly impressive performance from a player who could be a huge favourite in the upcoming eChampions League Finals and FC Pro World Championships.
Jonny wins 8-1 on aggregate
