Get Control!

September 16, 2025

Skateboarder grinds on rail, arms outstretched, as another skateboarder falls nearby in urban setting.

As you know, Flick-it is the system for controlling your skater in the Skate franchise, and we’ve resurrected it with improvements for skate. – ensuring you have options to customize how you control your skater when cruisin’ through San Vansterdam.

We wanted to nail the FEELING of skateboarding, and have done it through Flick-It: The soul of skate., resurrected in Frostbite™ and we feel this is the best the gameplay has ever felt.

Our Head of Tech, Jon Lawlor – part of the OG Skate 1 crew – along with our incredible gameplay team worked tirelessly to bring “The Toy” (the Flick-It system) back to life in Frostbite, and then continued to expand and build upon it with all-new animation, some sick new features and a focus on allowing our gameplay systems to seamlessly blend into each other, making the possibility space for players nearly endless.

With Flick-It, you steer with the left stick and perform flip tricks and board adjustments with the right stick.

  • Flick the right stick just right and you’ll ollie, kickflip, pop-shuvit, laserflip, and more.
  • Use the Right and Left triggers to grab with the corresponding hand.
  • Holding in your Left Bumper and using a D-Pad direction will let you Quick Gesture
    • Some gestures can be done while on board your skateboard or even mid-air. As a reminder, the flapping gesture does not make you fly, no matter how high a building you launch yourself off is.

The Skatepedia has a lot more info, and there’s no substitute like learning while you’re in the game. That’s why the folks at Full Circle created and start you off on The Isle of Grom.

First up, let’s talk about Control Options in the Gameplay menu.

You’ll have an option for Streamlined, Classic, or Experienced controls.

Streamlined - For the new to the franchise player, to get a feel for Flick-It controls

User customizes skateboarding game controls with options like "Streamlined" and "Flick-It Sensitivity" on a cityscape background.

Classic - The OG, where it all started back in Skate (2007) through Skate 2 and Skate 3. For the seasoned Flick-It player.

Customizable control settings and a controller diagram in the game Skate with the world 'Classic' highlighted.

Experienced - The Pro version. More settings and customization for your gameplay. Some folks call this Hardcore since you can adjust it to be as hardcore as you want (within skate.).

Control Presets

  • Streamlined - for the new to Skate franchise folks to get used to Flick-It.
  • Classic - the OG, the original, how Flick-It started in Skate 1-3.
  • Experienced - let’s get technical. Once you’ve mastered Flick-It, no you haven’t. Jump to Experienced and start tweaking those settings.
  • There are also more options in Preferences, like choosing your default stance, your Flick-It sensitivity, and holding your Fakie stance, to name just a few.

Assists

  • Tweak your difficulty options like Grind Assist, Vert Pump Assist, Allowed Fall Height, and more.

Trick Toggles

  • Add some steeze to your style with options for enabling Late Flips, Slappies, Wallies, Firecrackers, and holding Flip Tricks (Endless Pop-Shuvit, anyone?)

Camera

  • Camera settings let you adjust the FoV (Field of View) on and offboard, Follow Strength, Framing, Camera Offset, just to name a few.

Advanced Camera

  • Advanced Camera settings let you control options like Dynamic Side Switching, Shake Intensity, Speed Blur, and more.

Dive in. Set yourself up the way it feels good. Then jump in and see how it works. Don’t like the way it’s set? Change it.

That’ll get you started, but it’s certainly not the end. The more time you spend on and off your board in San Van, the more comfortable you’ll be. A lot of folks start on Simplified controls and quickly move to Classic or Experienced with some adjustments to the more advanced options. Whatever settings you choose, make sure it’s right for you.
