即便深處困境，探路者卻總是非常樂觀。馬文（行動機器多功能實體）具有位置偵察和調查的天賦，他數十年前在一座廢棄的倉庫中啟動，並不知道是誰和出於什麼原因而創造了他。探路者只有他的馬文職稱暗示了他的身份，他最終開始尋找自己的創造者。在英雄們的幫助下，他得知了自己是由邊疆最偉大的科學家所建造，以幫助解決邊疆的能源危機。
探路者在那之後學到了許多東西（像是如何做出一道風味絕佳的東方利維坦燉菜一樣），但他最重要的發現，則是他的部分零件被用來製造另一台機器……探路者的孩子。他原本加入 Apex 競賽是為了獲得追隨，並希望能博得他創造者的關注，但現在他的目標是引起任何可能知道他孩子的人的注意。同時，他仍然熱情且樂於助人，並隨時準備結交新朋友（然後對他們開槍）。
