There can only be one BMF, and at UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden, Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz threw down to decide who of the two was the baddest. Masvidal’s striking would prove too much for Stockton’s favorite son, as a gnarly cut forced a doctor’s stoppage between rounds.

The King of Rio ran roughshod through the WEC while on his way to claiming the organization’s Featherweight belt. That freakish dominance continued into UFC, where José Aldo became the inaugural featherweight champion and defended the title a record seven times.

In the main event of what is perhaps the biggest event in WEC history, newly-minted and thoroughly fearsome featherweight champion José Aldo delivered former 145-pound champ Uriah Faber a legendary beating, chopping away at the “California Kid’s” legs with vicious kicks over 25 minutes.

There aren’t many fighters in the UFC more deserving to call themselves BMFs than Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier. The two threw down for the BMF belt in Salt Lake City, Utah, with Gaethje putting a punctuation on the matchup with a devastating head kick.

Well on his way to establishing himself as one of the best Welterweights to ever walk this earth, Kamaru Usman would once more have to defend his title against bitter rival Colby Covington. While he wouldn’t get the finish like in their first meeting, this close but clear decision victory for the “Nigerian Nightmare” solidified him as a divisional great.

Already a champion, Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov became a bonafide superstar when he submitted Irish icon Conor McGregor at UFC 229. He’d not only maintain his perfect record but soar up the rankings and find himself among the pantheon of MMA greats.

A viral sensation before it was an everyday occurrence, the late Kimbo Slice became a superstar bubbling below the surface of pop culture thanks to word of mouth and grainy videos of him slugging it out in backyards all over Miami. Soon, he’d break through, fighting in major MMA promotions, competing on The Ultimate Fighter, and then UFC.

Slice, real name Kevin Ferguson, leaves behind a compelling legacy. From street fighting for money, to earning a scholarship to the University of Miami for a criminal justice major, to being a dedicated family man and worldwide phenomenon, it’s an impact as big as the man himself.

A sunkissed Californian surfer who stormed through the Strikeforce Middleweight ranks with relative ease, Luke Rockhold represented the new breed of Mixed Martial Artists — a fighter who could do it all. Including defending his strap against dogged wrestler Tim Kennedy.

Mark Coleman would have to use all his tools to make it through three fights in one night at the PRIDE Grand Prix 2000 Finals. In the end, Akira Shoji, Kazuyuki Fujita, and Igor Vovchanchyn were all nails to “The Hammer” on his way to a historic tournament victory.

The definition of tough, Matt “The Immortal” Brown introduced himself to fight fans on season seven of *The Ultimate Fighter*, making it to the quarter-finals. His appearance a precursor to an all-action 15-year, 30-fight UFC career.

After dispatching Hall-of-Famer José Aldo to win the Featherweight belt, and then repeating the feat six months later to defend his new throne, Max “Blessed” Holloway continued on his roll of dominance. Taking on the durable and dangerous Brian Ortega, Holloway battered the challenger over the course of four rounds before a doctor’s stoppage extended his win streak to thirteen.

In the ‘90s, the UFC was a proving ground to see which martial art reigned supreme. It only makes sense that Max Holloway, one of the modern game’s best boxers, would put on for the pugilists if he came on the scene pre-Y2K.
