Battlefield V War Stories: Under No Flag

A band of brigands take on one of the largest and most powerful air forces in World War 2.

Along with innovative multiplayer experiences, Battlefield™ V will explore mankind’s greatest conflict across a collection of single-player War Stories that bring the human toll of World War 2 to the forefront. War Stories uses the anthology format introduced in Battlefield™ 1, and each War Story will take players to unexpected fronts.

Today we’ll look at Under No Flag, where you’ll join a band of rogues to wage an unconventional war 500 miles behind enemy lines.

Play Under No Flag, the War Stories Prologue as well as all multiplayer modes and maps available at launch with EA Access and Origin Access Play First Trials.*

How Long Have You Got Left?

Under No Flag takes inspiration from the operations of the British Special Boat Section, or SBS. Not to be confused with the popularized Special Air Service, the SBS was an early special forces offshoot that was tasked with some of the most reckless WW2 missions.

This meant filling the SBS with operators who could think on their feet, people who didn’t wait to follow orders. This included men like the fictional Billy Bridger, who was sitting out the war in a London jail before getting handpicked to help cripple a Luftwaffe airbase.

“These kinds of people found a home in these special units, which needed people who were brigands, cutthroats, and rogues,” said Eric Holmes, War Stories design director. “Some people who really struggled in the regimented military until they found their place in a unit that rewarded independent thinking.”

What Bridger lacks in military bearing he makes up for with grit, determination, and knack for nitroglycerin. That is, he’s great at making things go boom.

George Mason is the British officer who plucks Bridger out of jail and into the SBS. With some doubts about his new recruit, Mason drags Bridger along, packing a smart mouth and the ability to stay one step ahead of everybody.

Pelle Hallert, cinematic director with DICE, shot Under No Flag to highlight the dynamic relationship between the two as Bridger fights for redemption and self-respect, even when things go haywire.

“The dialogue and the drama between these two characters, while they are squabbling and arguing, is a pretty light story and very charming, and very British in the way that they relate to each other,” Hallert said.

Sabotage, Your Way

Under No Flag gives players a choice at every turn on how to foil the Luftwaffe operations in the open desert. A good saboteur is never in one place for too long and is equipped to do massive damage and race to the next objective. We suggest playing with the flexibility and firepower of the Assault Class.

“Find ways to pick-off soldiers, blow up aircraft on the runway, or destroy resources and then vanish,” Holmes said.

With as many explosives as you’ll be packing, it’ll be difficult to stay quiet — so hit first. Move through a terrain of mud and cliffs and weave among aircraft remains as you blow past enemies on your way to sabotaging their most valuable aircraft and equipment.

Brute force is only one way to solve a problem and a little ingenuity goes a long way when tangling with the Luftwaffe. Trick the enemy, steal their Stuka Bombers, and use them to destroy the airbase.

But remember, you’re no-good Billy Bridger and are riding your last chance. Don’t spoil the sabotage by alerting the base of your presence. If you trigger that German radio cackle, prepare for a wave of reinforcements — vehicles and soldiers ready to extinguish your plans.

Are you a real bruiser or do you only play the part? See if you have enough gumption to make it out alive in Under No Flag when Battlefield V launches in November.
