It was the kick heard around the world. At WEC 53, in the final round of the main event of the promotion’s last-ever fight card, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis closed things out with a bang. After running along the cage wall, he jumped, kicked, and dropped defending champion Benson Henderson, a move reminiscent of “a ninja,” the late Stephen Bonnar would exclaim on the call. That all-time highlight secured Pettis the round and the belt.

As fearsome a fighter as his nickname would suggest, “The Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit has authored some of the most memorable performances in MMA history. Before stepping into the Octagon, he made his name in the WEC and served as its last reigning welterweight champion, dispatching Hiromitsu Miura to defend his title a third time at WEC 35.

When WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho missed weight, his bout against Chael Sonnen was deemed a non-title affair. Sonnen would go on to win, avenging a previous loss to the champ, but with no gold to show for it. In an act of contrition, Filho would mail his belt to the man who bested him.

Cub Swanson lives by the sword, as his fourteen performance bonuses across the WEC and UFC can attest. After running into the freight train that was José Aldo, Swanson would rebound with a bonus-worthy submission over John Franchi.

After losing to Urijah Faber at WEC 26, Dominick Cruz would regroup, drop to bantamweight, and kickstart a legacy by winning seven straight fights on the blue canvas. He would eventually capture the 135lb title and defend it twice, including at the WEC’s monumental final event, before dominating in the UFC.

After stumbling in his debut, Dustin Poirier returned to the blue canvas of the WEC cage and lived up to the hype built on the regional scene, dispatching Zach Micklewright with strikes at just 53 seconds into the first round.

In the main event of what is perhaps the biggest event in WEC history, newly-minted and thoroughly fearsome featherweight champion José Aldo delivered former 145-pound champ Uriah Faber a legendary beating, chopping away at the “California Kid’s” legs with vicious kicks over 25 minutes.

The blue canvas of the WEC cage is synonymous with Urijah “The California Kid” Faber, who would dominate its featherweight division and become a fan favorite in the process. At WEC 26, he added a feather to his cap that only got better with age when he submitted a young Dominick Cruz via guillotine choke in the first round of their championship matchup.
