We have a lot to get through today when talking about what you will see in Madden NFL 27’s Ultimate Team! New upgrade paths, New twitch rewards, and one of the most exciting Ultimate Team features to be added recently, new types of player items! Let’s dive in with our dev team!
WELCOME BACK TO ULTIMATE TEAM
Hey everyone, Ultimate Team devs here, we as a team are excited to break down everything coming your way in Madden NFL 27! Before we get started, we wanted to first thank you for your feedback in Madden NFL 26, it gave us the building blocks for how we wanted to shape Ultimate Team in 27! This year, we have a lot to introduce to you, including, Ultimate Captains, Evos, and a completely new Upgrade System, giving you more control, more customization, and more ways than ever to build a team that’s truly your own. This year, it’s your league, your Ultimate Team. Don’t forget to check back on EASPORTS_MUT X & EAMaddenNFL on Twitch as we near early access on August 6th, 2026 for more information around what content and programming you can expect at launch. Let’s get started with a new way for you to interact with Core Player Items!
THE NEW UPGRADE SYSTEM
We’ve reinvented how you upgrade eligible players in Ultimate Team.. The new system is designed to increase flexibility, making it easier than ever to improve your players and experiment with different builds. Players can now upgrade multiple tiers at once instead of going step-by-step. Player upgrades can also be influenced by archetypes, meaning two players could start the same but evolve into completely different builds based on how they are upgraded. This creates more customization, allowing you to shape players based on your playstyle and preferences.
Skill Points
A core part of our new upgrade system this year is the introduction of Skill Points. Skill Points can be earned through gameplay, completing objectives on the individual player item, or acquired with in-game currencies. These Skill Points are tied to the specific players items you earned them with. This also allows you to upgrade players at your own pace, coming back to them whenever you want to continue their progression. This system lets you build your roster how you want.
EVOS
Evos allow you to transform and enhance players in ways never before possible, opening up new strategies and possibilities for your lineup. Evos can increase max player OVR, unlock new upgrade paths, add or improve abilities, expand chemistry options, and even change archetypes.
Some Evos also allow you to extend the lifespan of players on your roster by being chained together, while others are a self-contained experience. This gives you the ability to decide how deeply you want to invest in a given player on your roster by adding new abilities, expanding chemistry options, reducing ability point costs, or even unlocking entirely new roles. Your player doesn't just improve - they evolve into something unique based on what you choose. Whether it’s a favorite player, a theme team piece, or a player filling a key gap, Evos give you the ability to keep your players competitive.
ULTIMATE CAPTAIN
This year, we wanted to give you a deeper sense of ownership and personalization within Ultimate Team. The Ultimate Captain is the foundation of your team in Ultimate Team 27. For the first time ever, you can choose one core player you’re passionate about and carry them with you throughout the entire year, progressing and evolving them from kickoff to the final whistle. Whether it’s your favorite player, or someone who perfectly fits your playstyle.
As the year progresses, your Captain progresses with it, allowing you to continue upgrading, evolving, and customizing that player to remain relevant throughout the year. And if you ever want to change things up, you can power down your existing Captain and swap for an entirely new Captain so you have the ability to explore entirely new builds and team strategies. Your Ultimate Captain combines all the best parts of Evos and Upgrades and applies them to a single core player of your choosing, all while helping you build out your team with player items from other programs.
Objectives on Items
Some player items now have objectives directly on them, rewarding you with Skill Points for completing those objectives. These objectives can range from stat-based goals tied to a player’s position or milestone goals that reward long term play. The Skill Points earned are then used to upgrade that player’s OVR, attributes, chemistries, X-Factors, and abilities, meaning your performance on the field has a more direct impact on the growth and development of your roster than ever before.
While you are in the middle of a game, you will be able to take a look and see how much more progress you need to make before you complete your item’s objectives.
REWARDS, RANKED, AND MORE
Ranked is where the best Ultimate Team players prove themselves. In Ultimate Team 27, we’re evolving Ranked into a more competitive, rewarding, and skill-driven experience designed to better separate the elite from the rest of the field.
This year, we’re revisiting both matchmaking and division structure to create a healthier competitive space where every game matters, climbing the ladder feels meaningful, and the margin for error becomes smaller at the highest levels of competition. While early divisions won’t be receiving much in the way of changes, you’ll need to post increasingly better win rates on average to climb ranks. Ranked is the place where top players battle for prestige, rewards, and a coveted spot in the Top 100.
We’ve also made changes to the Event Pass. While dominant performances in Events will still be heavily rewarded, progression is now better balanced to recognize the time and consistent play you spend in game.
Solo Seasons and Solo Champions will be receiving seasonal updates in M27, including rewards. We want both of these modes to feel fresh and up-to-date with what’s going on in Ultimate Team, as well as provide a place for offline players of all skill levels to test themselves.
This year, we're also going to continue our work to better align challenge difficulty to star requirements. We want you to be able to look at a challenge, look at how many stars it has, and understand what type of challenge you’re in for when you load in.
Gridiron Tokens

This year, we are revamping the rewards you receive on Twitch. Introducing Gridiron Tokens! Similar to the reward system from last year’s EA Sports College Football 26, Gridiron Tokens will give you flexibility to choose what rewards you want, when you want them after watching your favorite creators on Twitch. Do you want to redeem them immediately and receive familiar Twitch Packs? Or do you want to save up your tokens to earn some more impactful rewards. Before we go into additional details about what rewards you could earn, let's talk really quick about what Twitch Drops are.
Twitch Drops are a way for you to earn content just by watching your favorite creators! Make sure that you have your EA Account Linked to your Twitch Account which you can do here and then begin watching! Once you earn a reward, it will show up in your Twitch Inventory and from there you will be able to claim your reward! More information about drops can be found here.
Back to Gridiron Tokens! These tokens will act as a currency used to redeem specific Gridiron Token sets which you will be able to find under the “sets” tab. Earn Gridiron Tokens by watching select Madden NFL 27 content on Twitch when drops are active. Worried about binder space? Don’t be! An option to convert 10 Gridiron Tokens can be converted into 1 Gridiron Super Token so you can fill your binders with all of the new and shiny player items from programs! Also, Gridiron Token redemption sets will continue to update as new content drops in Madden Ultimate Team.
Giving you freedom to choose what Twitch rewards you want was a goal of ours and thanks to your feedback, we were able to dial in on which rewards were your favorite! Here is a list of what you will be able to redeem for your tokens this year!
You might notice there is a Team of The Year Player Item option, an announcement with details will come later this year!
More opportunities to earn tokens will be provided this year through Madden Live! We are bringing it back but different than how you remember. Stay tuned to learn more later this summer about how Madden Live will be brought back!
