Girls Who Code: “It’s a Movement.”

Women represent 12% of all computer science graduates today. In 1984, that number was 37%. What’s going on?

That’s the challenge being tackled today by Girls Who Code, a non-profit organization dedicated to gender parity in computing fields. By working with young women across the United States, they are inspiring more girls to learn to code and pursue a career in technology. As a company powered by technology, that sounds pretty good to us.

Here are a few startling facts from Girls Who Code:

·         In middle school, 74% of girls express interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), but when choosing a college major, just 0.3% of high school girls select computer science.

·         In a 2014 survery of the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program, 100% of the respondents reported they are definitely or more likely to major in computer science following the program.

·         While 57% of bachelor’s degrees are earned by women, just 12% of computer science degrees are awarded to women.

·         Despite the fact that 55% of overall AP test takers are girls, only 17% of AP Computer Science test takers are high school girls.

·         Women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but hold just 25% of the jobs in technical or computing fields.
