It used to be just you, Shepard, and a team of scrappy NPCs against the galaxy, but BioWare’s third installment of Mass Effect is finally widening the interstellar playing field. When Mass Effect 3 launches on March 6, 2012, an optional multiplayer mode called Galaxy at War will launch along with it.

Featuring four-player cooperative gameplay, the Galaxy at War multiplayer feature puts players in the role of a team of elite Special Forces soldiers, sent to protect resources and assets vital to the anti-Reaper war effort. Players will be able to choose between six classes and six unique races in this mode, including Human, Krogan, Asari, Drell, Salarian, and Turian.

As a bonus, progress made in the Galaxy at War multiplayer mode will also link back to your single player campaign, making it easier to take down those evil alien Reapers.

BioWare also announced today that gamers who purchase Battlefield 3 and activate their Battlefield 3 Online Pass will be granted early access to the multiplayer portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo. The developer will be announcing additional ways for Shepard-loving fans to gain early access to multiplayer in the coming months, so you may want to keep your eyes open.

Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer feature can be activated via the Online Pass found in every new copy of Mass Effect 3, or by purchasing an Online Pass separately. Pre-order Mass Effect 3 today on Origin, to score three unique bonus items: an N7 Arsenal Pack, a Robotic Dog, and a stylish Squadmate Alternate Outfit Pack.
