SimCity Update #2 from Lucy

I’ll keep this short since almost everyone who cares is busy building cities and making friends in SimCity.

Maxis continues to make huge progress in addressing the lag and server-capacity issues we experienced at launch.  We’ve improved our server response time by 40x, we’ve doubled the number of players in the game at the same time and reduced server down times.

The situation is good, but not good enough.  And since my boss is one of the negatively affected (!)  - we’re still driving hard to get everyone online, playing together, and no hitches.

Tens of thousands of new players are logging in every day.  For that support – that commitment from our fans -- we are deeply grateful.  More than anything, we know that information is important to our players. Our Twitter chat today made that especially clear, and I want to say thank you sharing your ideas, your issues and for being, well, nicer than I thought you would be, given everything you’ve been through.  Thank you.

The new servers we rolled out have a new faster set up.  We are now dedicated to updating our original servers so that those of you who have been playing these past few days can get the benefits on servers where your cities are played. To do this, we will have to take the original servers down one by one to upgrade them. The improvements will be worth the downtime, and thanks for hanging with us as we do this. We’ll also be adding more tonight as well. We’ll be sending out detailed info shortly through our community forums and launcher.

That’s it for today. We’ll keep you updated on what’s to come. Expect the first of our server upgrades to start this evening.

Anyword on planned times each server will go down, I understand things will change as issues arise but what is the intent? Specifically I am concerned about NA East 2, but I am sure we are all wondering.

Good luck with that one!!! They should have had something in place where all servers are linked. They don't because they lack respect for consumers, and won't cover the expense. I have three servers in my house that are setup to link... If I want to play a paticular city but the server is full or slow as sh*t, I cannot play. That is rediculous! I should be able to play when I want to! Not when you tell me I can!

Thanks for the update. Please provide server specific information as it becomes available. NA West 2 says available right now, but it's not actually letting me play.

Why don't you guys just make an offline single player mode and require constant connections for those that want to participate in multiplayer/global economy.

If it was meant for online, then provide the service! SERVICE!!!!! I've ran IT dept's before, $50 million dollar companies!!!! This is rediculous at even the smallest level much less a multibillion dollar company!!!

You say you've run a $50 million dollar company's IT department, and you don't understand the difference between their comparably minor traffic (~250k simultaneous users) and 10 million+ simultaneous users accessing servers? Oh... and you can't spell ridiculous, or have knowledge regarding limitations on the use of the exclamation mark? Your story strikes me as... ridiculous.

It's was ******* midnight to 1:00 am when I posted. Sorry for the misspelling, you troll! What do you go around trolling on yahoo news stories too! Did you not understand the comment from lowest level to highest level, meaning an international corporation??? Your comment strikes me as idiotic!!! You got a refund phone number for me??? If not, go apply for a job at EA, you sound fluent enough to be working there! FYI - If your familiar with technology, it doesn't matter what sze IT dept. you run... I could have all their servers netwoked together in 2 days!!! Take those exclamation mrks and shove em up your A*SS!

Oh, sorry Druid, please comment on the spelling errors above as well! 250K users/10 million users.... I would think they know how many copies they sold... They came to opening day with five or so servers!!! LMAO! If your an english teacher then go grade your students work. If you're on this forum then make some d*mn sense! Way to thumb me down and yourself up. It shows you either work for them, or completely unintelligent! And by the way, as the forum police, your comment isn't even on the post I made about my company! So therefore, you're RIDICULOUS!!!!!

Jesus Christ, you're obviously 12 years old and have never worked in a job environment before. Not only is your spelling atrocious but your overemphasis of punctuation makes you look like one of those middle-aged women on Facebook who think they are so cool for being on the internet. Go back to playing on your iPad, and next time do some research on an awful company that has butchered game series' for the past ten years.

Oh wow, if your talking about me. Go get a brain. I don't "personally" own an iPad... You want to disagree with that as well... You must be an apple junkie (and now your going to correct me by saying, I should have capitilized that)... Last I checked, twitter, forums, IM's don't have to 100% correctly spelled. GO BOTHER SOMEONE ELSE YOU TROLL. AKA AS*SHOLE!

That there is a good idea, if they do this then they have time to sort out the connection problems, then there would be no problem, so when they get the servers up everyone is happy.

I'm not sure if you, Lucy, actually read these comments, but as a female gamer, I have always been a fan of yours. I just wanted to say I appreciate what you and the employees at Maxis are doing to fix the problem with SimCity. I know a lot of you are away from your families for long periods of time in an effort to provide those who buy your games with a good experience. Also, the free game is a very nice gesture because you aren't obligated to give us anything at all really. Thank you! :)

I originally logged in to post my request that EA post a link somewhere to expected server downtimes. Apparently, I am a little behind on posting that request :) However having read this post I really must reply: Thanking them for doing their jobs by trying to fix a product that isn't working? No offense but you must be related to someone that is working on this project. Although it wasn't my intent to use this forum as a place to vent my frustrations I may as well add, while I'm at it, that if I had wanted a game from the EA inventory that I didn't own... I would have already purchased it. Personally, I feel like that offer is a slap in the face. That is a completely useless gesture that just looks good for publicity's sake. Please don't be fooled by what is a completely empty gesture on the part of EA. Giving away an outdated game from their inventory costs them absoulutely nothing and should be treated as such.

Hi, just chiming in to say I am very satisfied with the pace remedying the system and the frequent communication since the backlash. That and the reception to criticism and upcoming compensation. Now that the game is working my girlfriend & I have been having a great time with the game. In regards to offline, I find the online a strength for my multiple machines and sharing with her, but offline really should be added down the road. It's a win-win, preserving the game if the service ends

Really??? Communication? Are you on medication!!! They've only started communicating within the last day or so. It's been 5 days now. They also don't provide a simple solution for receiving a refund because they are not providing the product nor service I paid for months ago! The service will eventually end! They will not come out with an offline mode! Give it 5 years!!! You must not ever put in a PS3 game that is 2-4 yrs old... They sell an product on predetermined aspects...

I commend your courage for answering questions earlier today on the Simcity Twitter, Lucy. While I think that a free game is the least of the gestures EA could have done to alleviate the problem, I'm happy to see that you guys are working hard to fix this issue. Can't wait to see region features as well as Cheetah speed back in place. Also, wish Ocean Quigley a happy birthday if you didn't already :)

THANK YOU for keeping us in the loop (and yes, off-line single player mode would be optimal). And while you're at it, read this: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/08/simcity-burning-a-warning-to-microsoft-sony-and-all-publishers-on-the-dangers-of-always-online-drm It's how we ALL feel.

Dumping your users to a main menu screen for server outages is hardly what I would call "communication". Please look into notifying in game when the servers are going to go down. This is an expected mechanic of a MMO that relies entirely on servers.

Why would I have to launch through IE and log in to a server to play? I've been looking forward to this game for a long time now but see'ing that it runs through the IE Origin window to play single player is absurd. I am a pc gamer and have used other platforms such as battle.net/steam but this origin platform is the worst I have ever seen. Who came up with the bright idea to make single player require you to login to a server? You make two buttons "Single Player" and "Multi Player" and you should never have to connect to a server for Single Player. I bought Battlefield3 and found the experience on this platform to be terrible. I mean I have to exit the game completely only to re-open it completely back up to join a different server. I stopped playing BF3 because of the fail origin platform, the game was fun but just the thought of navigating your horrible platform made me play something else instead. Good job on ruining the Sim City series for people who want to play offline out of this terrible Origin launcher.

Hi Lucy. Nice speech there!! But... What you plan to do with costumers that haven't been even able to launch the game (like myself)? I pre order the game and was fully charged for it in August 2012 , and this whole mess has been really upsetting, I mean, I don't know if you quite understand, but some of us feel ripped off!! So... I'll ask again... Which will be the solution for costumers like myself? This is so frustrating... But since you've already cashed in, I believe you don't care

So far so good, even through the ridiculously frustrating times connecting to a server to play the game. Read that traffic was patched, my 2nd biggest complaint, as I've seen entire avenues of cars (let alone a single fire/police/mass-transit vehicle etc) u-turn, and u-turn again, only to be in the same avenue, sitting at the same stoplight. I've ventured off into joining public regions, my biggest complaint is not being able to filter open games. Please add filters & big comments, can't type

Me too, the fire truck put out a fire then drove a ways then u turned then drove back to the house then u turned then ... then... then ... and then it finally drove back to the station! I was like ????! I think the AI needs tweaking.

I still can't stop coming back to the BETA test and the problems with the server then. I fully expected that LOTS of extra servers would be up and running after the beta server couldn't hold the limited amount of players in a limited game esp if it needed constant server use. I figured they'd go and rent server space which could either be purchased or not depending upon longterm need. It all goes back to.. OFFLINE MODE with no need of constant servers!

Please, EA, make an offline, single-player mode. Sometimes we just want some time to play by ourselves.

Everyone just type OFFLINE in caps if you want an offline mode, maybe when someone at EA gets around to halfway pretending to glance at what we have to say, it will stand out

OFFLINE. Love you, EA -- you make some of the BEST games, but some of the WORST decisions. We should not have to depend on your servers to play the game on our own. The online social play is a fine idea, but don't force it on all the players, all the time. I'm not sure if the reasoning behind this is anti-piracy, or that you just think all gamers want to be constantly social, but either way, you're continue to alienate the players who have been opening their wallets for you for years.

Have an offline mode for the people who don't care about the global economy and that just want to build their own region... possibly even add computerized mayors for other cities in the region... perhaps add the ability to be able to purchase someone else's city if they have multiple and need a little extra simoleons
