Update on College Football

Today I am sad to announce that we will not be publishing a new college football game next year, and we are evaluating our plan for the future of the franchise. This is as profoundly disappointing to the people who make this game as I expect it will be for the millions who enjoy playing it each year. I’d like to explain a couple of the factors that brought us to this decision.

We have been stuck in the middle of a dispute between the NCAA and student-athletes who seek compensation for playing college football. Just like companies that broadcast college games and those that provide equipment and apparel, we follow rules that are set by the NCAA – but those rules are being challenged by some student-athletes.  For our part, we are working to settle the lawsuits with the student-athletes.  Meanwhile, the NCAA and a number of conferences have withdrawn their support of our game.  The ongoing legal issues combined with increased questions surrounding schools and conferences have left us in a difficult position – one that challenges our ability to deliver an authentic sports experience, which is the very foundation of EA SPORTS games.

At EA SPORTS, college football has always been a labor of love, and it is unfortunate that these business and legal issues have impacted our ability to make next year’s game.  This franchise has been developed by a team that is deeply committed to the tradition and culture of this sport – that’s why fans have always loved it. We are working to retain the talented people who are part of the team by placing them elsewhere within the EA SPORTS organization.

In the meantime, we will continue to be connected and engaged with our fans who are playing EA SPORTS NCAA Football. Our decision does not affect our commitment to NCAA Football 14 and the consumers who love playing the game.

You get -thumbs down for saying NFL2k, its no better than Madden 25... and if they could have milked the fans they would have as well. I hope this is a wake up call for EA sports.

"Millions who enjoy playing it each year"? Obviously, nobody at EA has been checking the sales charts -- the declining quality of this game has kept it from selling in the "millions" for years. Good riddance.

The problem lies not within EA; it lies within the selfish student athletes. They get $100,000+ worth of free education, free food, and free travel throughout the United States, and for a select few, fame, glory and the possibility of millions of dollars for the ability to become a professional athlete. But that's not good enough; the greed and selfishness makes them want more and more. This is the first domino to fall.

If student athletes get paid, small schools will no longer be able to field competitive teams. This will decrease income for those schools that fund other activities and campus improvements. Tuitions, merchandise and ticket prices will increase. What about water polo or tennis, who obviously benefit from football revenue? Will they also be paid, or will their sports cease operation because of lack of funding because football consumes all resources? There is greed by the schools, and there is greed and selfishness by the players. I applaud EA for not feeding the monkey. I love the game and will miss it, but I condone the payment of players who receive enough freebies already. I was injured in high school and never got the opportunity to get a free ride at college (grades weren't good enough)... those are the breaks. That's life.

I know EA is in the business of making great sports games that we buy year after year. What they are really doing when it comes to College Football is supporting the NCAA & the players. This is one more way for us to get excited about college football, our teams and the players. The only reason I even know the sames of so many players is because of the fans who crank out those rosters. They should be paying EA not the other way around. You f" ing babies.

Make an all-customizable "National College Football" game and let us create 125 college football teams and rosters, and 10 to 12 conferences. All of it can either be user-edited or randomized by computer, like Create-A-School but on a large scale.

I agree with this 100%. Just release a game with some made up league, but include robust team creation tools. Within weeks the community will whip up better rosters than EA ever could.

just put everything thing on Teambuilder and let us import all our own stuff into a game where you have a bunch of default generic starter teams/conferences. give us the ability to create/delete conferences, make custom conference logos/names, put all the uniform designs on the teambuilder site and just let the fans/gamers run wild with our creative juices. EA you really have no idea the level of artistic talent that is out there.

Just make the game with all created and fake players. The recruiting and program building is the best part of the game anyways. After a few seasons in franchise mode the roster was made up of all fake guys anyways. Let people make their own team names, helmets, uniforms, stadiums, and conferences and be done with it. EA's constant effort to make things "real" is a waste of time - you can't make it real - it's a video game - just make it fun!

Totally agree. Let us scale it up or down as we want. Make power conferences, or a league of only 60 teams, with the option to add more in subsequent years. There are some things EA can get rights to, maybe some independent schools or some of the bowl games. I don't care if the University of Buffalo's stadium is a brick-for-brick re-creation, so one of 40 generic stadiums would work. An open-ended college football game with less restrictions would be MORE fun.

Since you guys can't make anymore college football games try to get the license to make baseball games again your guys back in the day had the best baseball game out back in 2005 with MVP baseball. You guys need to take that franchise back 2k sports the have ruined America's pastime. It would be good to see that franchise back in your guys lineup of sports games.

I have a better idea. Instead of placing them elsewhere, you keep them where they are make 2014 BETTER!! FIX the problems that are there (you KNOW there are problems, right?) and make it an overal even BETTER experience. and UPDATE it to support the new playoff system that is coming so that we can continue to enjoy 2014 and others will still want to buy it!!

EA done it to themselves... copy, paste, repeat. Fans are completely and utterly sick of paying $60 per years for a couple simple updates that could have came in form of a DLC for $15. EA has ripped us off long enough, next will be Madden unless you get off your ***** and do work. If you can't make the game better in 1 year, do small roster DLC for Madden, and hold off 3 years and come out with a bigger and better game... sick of having to pay every year for a that isn't worth $60+.

Why everyone is bashing NCAA is just dumbfounding. It's been a very fun game consistently for years now, put the Madden-v-NCAA argument away (because they're both two different types of football when you really think about it). It's sad to see such a fun game with such hard work sink into the abyss. I see such great potential in NCAA, there are so many things a developer can do with a sport like College ball. EA saying it was a Labor of love just makes me lose hope for it all :'(

This is a disgrace, I am going to miss this game next year despite my annual distress at the lack of updates surrounding the University of Kansas, particularly their uniform. Please give us an update so even when the franchise is gone I can enjoy my Jayhawks and their modern uniforms (at least one uniform from this year would be nice)

Are you working on the Uniform update for Texas Tech before you shut down? I really hope this is a bad joke, I was thinking about buying an Xbox One just to see you guys exploit the power in that game machine. I was getting excited for next years title. Bummer... don't stop trying to settle the legal issues.

The fix to this problem is so obvious. Fans want to be able to customize their leagues more than they want the game to be exactly like real life. Make a game where users can create schools, conferences, stadiums and players. Sure we might lose the easy "play now" option but most people play this game to build a dynasty anyway. If EA gives the user more control of what the game is like than the users will conitnue to buy their product.

No NCAA well bring back a couple of classics Def Jam series with the PS2 controls(use more than just Def Jam record label. i.e. Sony, Arista, Virgin)Having a 50+ man roster with tons of downloadable artist extending the life longer than 3-6 months. and NBA streets prefer to modeled after vol.2
