At Electronic Arts, everything we do is meant to Inspire the World to Play. Approximately 8,800 employees bring the spirit of play to EA every day, living our Purpose & Beliefs – Creativity, Pioneering, Passion, Determination, Learning and Teamwork – to deliver powerful and immersive experiences to millions of players around the world.
Kicking off our special series highlighting our 2018 Purpose & Beliefs award recipients, we speak with Senior Privacy Counsel, Jo Copping, who was recognized with the Determination Award.
What’s your role at EA?
I joined EA in 2012 as Senior Privacy Counsel. I am responsible for privacy in the EU, Asia Pacific (APAC) and Latin America (LATAM). I advise the business on international data privacy and cyber security laws, working closely with our games teams in the EU and APAC, as well as teams such as Finance, HR and Talent Acquisition.
Why did you want to work at EA?
I was looking for a new challenge when this role became available. Although I trained as (and love being) a lawyer, I am also fascinated by technology and the position at EA offered me the best of both. I get to apply the law, something I’m very passionate about, to cutting edge technology. Privacy law and technology are both constantly evolving which means there’s always something new to learn - I never get bored!
What are the best things about your job?
First, the people. I am incredibly lucky to get to work with such a diverse range of people who are so passionate, dynamic, creative, intelligent, supportive and generally a lot of fun to be around. My colleagues really are an inspiration to me. I love visiting new offices, meeting new people and learning as much about the business as possible.
Secondly, the end product. Our games are unique works of art and I feel very proud to be part of the team that brings them to market.
What are some of the challenges you face in your role?
I love a challenge. My biggest to date has been interpreting and applying the EU’s new privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation, to EA’s activities. The global nature of my role can also be challenging, for example coordinating advice on global initiatives from multiple jurisdictions can be tricky, but it’s extremely rewarding.
What’s your favorite perk at EA?
EA has a lot of outstanding perks: gym membership, flexibility, social events such as bar nights, holiday parties, family parties, and of course, THE FREE GAMES. Our location does everything it can to make EA an amazing environment to work in and to ensure employees have a good work life balance.
But for me the biggest perk is coming to work each day because I want to, not because I have to.
What has been your favorite EA memory?
I have a couple. The first was when I joined EA and was given the opportunity to live in Redwood City and work from the corporate campus for two months with my husband and 1 year old. The experience was phenomenal, I was fully immersed into life at EA HQ which gave me a great understanding of the business, but I also had a great time with my family exploring the area.
The second was the companywide Purpose & Beliefs award I won for my work on EA’s GDPR project. Being recognized for my efforts in front of the entire company was incredibly rewarding.
How do you unwind and unplug outside of EA?
I like to exercise, spend time with family and friends, food and travel. I also have a healthy “obsession” with fashion, shoes and clothes and love a good shopping trip!
