Title: Development Director
Organization: Worldwide Studios
Before working at EA, I studied Computer Science and Mathematics at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, ON. After graduation, I moved out west to chase my lifelong dream of working in the video game industry. I didn’t have a job when I moved to Vancouver, so to be able to afford to stay here, I worked several construction jobs in the real estate market. While doing construction work, I applied to several EA jobs and also had my resume submitted online, in hopes of starting a career in my dream field.
Getting Your Start with EA
I came home from work one evening in 2006, and I had a message on my answering machine from an EA recruiter. He had found my resume in the system and thought that I would be a good match for an entry level position within the company as a QA tester. I did well on the interviews and eventually accepted an offer and started my career at EA.
Working at EA
Working at EA has been even better than I expected it would be. What really makes it great is the people that I get to work with every day. The office is filled with talented and passionate individuals who are all working towards the same goal: to make great games. We work hard, but we also celebrate our successes and have fun along the way.
The video game industry is competitive, which means we’re always looking at the latest technologies in order to help us build the next great feature/application, or to improve on an existing one. The technology stack we are currently using is diverse, so there is always something new and exciting to learn.
When I first start working here, I had no idea how many opportunities would be presented that would help me grow as a person and an employee. EA has provided opportunities to take courses to further my education, to volunteer within the community, to fundraise for charities, to join intramural sports leagues, and so much more. I know I am fortunate here and I try not to ever take it for granted.
From a professional standpoint, I’ve been able to continue to grow and consistently expand my area of responsibility. I also have some big personal goals that I’m chasing, and I feel like they can all be achieved within EA.
Any Thoughts to Those Seeking a Career at EA?
If you have a desire to be in the video game industry, then work towards that goal every day. Don’t let your dreams just be dreams.
