Title: Technical Director

Organization: Worldwide Studios

Location: Seoul

Who I Am

My name is Sang, and I’m a Technical Director at SPEARHEAD studio in Seoul, Korea. I received my undergraduate degree in Computer Science at George Mason University in Virginia and a master’s degree in Computer Vision at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). Before joining EA, I had both academic research and work experience in various technical areas from commercial application development to robotics and embedded systems. Games and entertainment, however, were the major themes connecting these various experiences, and I chose to dive into game development directly.

What I Do

As a Technical Director on the FIFA Online project, which is a free-to-play (F2P) game service in Korea, China and Southeast Asia, I take care of technical decisions for content development and live services. Due to the nature of F2P, FIFA Online has a relatively short development and release cadence for every month’s regular update. I have to manage a flexible development plan to cope with dynamic user response from our monthly update and online game market changes. Live services in multiple regions results in various technical issues to be managed, such as hacking tools, farmers, service interruptions and so on. I work with my engineers and other teams to handle these issues so that our game is ready for our players. At the same time, I’m constantly searching for ways to improve development efficiency and the technical stability of our game. I discuss strategy with other TDs in our studio, as well as with studio teams across EA. People management is another large part of my job as a TD. I constantly meet with my employees to hear their thoughts and concerns, whether it be in a group setting or one-on-one. This way, I can understand more about them and about our team and studio as a whole.

What is My Day?

I start my day relatively early. I cherish morning hours and like to start my day thinking and planning for the day ahead alone in the office. Since we have live services in multiple regions and I collaborate with other studios in different time zones, I check my email first to see if there are any issues I received overnight to follow up on. I have a short daily scrum and weekly meetings to check issues and progress of our development. I also participate in technical design review meetings and spend my time in code review as part of my work to ensure project stability. Writing documents for project planning and status update reports also encompass a large part of my day.

Where Am I Going?

Our studio has strength in F2P game development and our FIFA online project is having good results in multiple service regions. Various services of our project offers various challenges which make me and my team to grow, and I believe we can achieve more by continually improving the development process. My goal at EA is to make improvements to create better games for our players.
