What are Evos?

In the NFL, no player stays the same throughout the season. They improve, they learn, and they practice to keep opponents on their toes and give their team the best possible chance at success. 

The Player Items on your Madden Ultimate Team™ are no different, and that’s where Evos (short for Evolutions) come in.

Evos let you transform Player Items in ways that weren’t possible in Ultimate Team before, allowing you to complete objectives and earn Skill Points, which can be used to increase a Player Item’s max overall (OVR), unlock new upgrade paths, add or improve abilities, expand chemistry options, or even change player archetypes. Through Evos, you can expand the possibilities for roster building or devote your time to upgrading your favorite players throughout the year.

Types of Evos

There are four types of Evos: Ability, Archetype, Chemistry, and OVR. (Note: all examples given are hypothetical - consult the in-game Evo Store for currently available Evos and their specific upgrade paths).

Ability Evos add new abilities or X-Factors, improve existing ones (such as turning a Bronze ability to Silver), or reduce their Ability Points (AP) costs. For example, if a Gunslinger Evo was available in the Evo Store, it could add the Gunslinger Ability to any eligible QB Player Item. Remember that after gaining an ability, you still need to equip it to your Player Item.

Archetype Evos can change or enhance a specific on-field Archetype and role. For example, if a Power LG is put into an Agile - LG Blueprint Evo, their Evo upgrade path can shift them into an Agile LG Archetype while increasing attributes related to that Archetype.

Chemistry Evos unlocks new team chemistry options and scheme fits. For example, a “32 NFL Team Chemistry” Evo can grant an eligible Player Item the Chemistry for every NFL team, allowing them to be flexible in roster construction. Note that you must equip the newly gained Chemistry to your Player Item after completing this Evo type.

OVR Evos simply allows you to increase a Player Item’s maximum overall (OVR) rating, either by raising the maximum OVR of an existing Archetype path or adding another Archetype path to reach that OVR. For example, if an 83 OVR Evo is available in the Store, it can improve a specific Player Item’s OVR from their current rating up to an 83 OVR.

Before applying an Evo, you can “Preview” what it can change. Evos can either be removable or be locked to a Player Item once applied, and there may also be a cost to remove an Evo, so be sure to confirm the exact caveats for a given Evo before applying it to your Player Item of choice.

Some Evos can encompass multiple Evo types. For example, an Evo can increase both OVR and allow for Archetype shifts, which is the case with the Ultimate Captain Evo.

Ultimate Captain Evo

Every team needs a captain.

All players have access to the Ultimate Captain Evo, a free, persistent Evo that can be added or removed to eligible Player Items at any time. This Overall-improving Evo, which also can open up additional player archetypes, evolves throughout the year with a new maximum overall cap each season. 

Whether you have a favorite NFL player, an affinity to a team, a Player Item from a previous Season you want to keep upgrading for the future, or a core member of the team you want to build a roster around, the Ultimate Captain Evo is your opportunity to designate that team leader.

How to Unlock Evos

Evos can be found by visiting the Evo Store; this appears in multiple menus within MUT, but can be most easily found by navigating to the “Marketplace” section of the Main Menu under “Evolutions.”

There are three ways to unlock Evos, one of which is by completing a certain level of a Program Field Pass. If an Evo appears locked on the Evo Store, it will typically show a required Field Pass level in a given Program; reach that level, and you’ll be able to access that Evo.

The other methods for unlocking Evos is by purchasing them with Madden Points or Coins. Consult the Evo Store for the exact amount of Points or Coins needed for an Evo.

How to Complete Evos

Some Evos grant instant changes to a Player Item; for example, a “32 NFL Team Chemistry” Evo immediately gives the Evo’d Player Item those team chemistries (that must be equipped manually in the Upgrade screen after unlocking). However, in most cases, Evo requires Skill Points. Depending on the Evo, Skill Points can be purchased with Madden Points, but often, Skill Points are earned by completing objectives.

Objectives

When inspecting a Player Item and viewing its “Upgrades,” select “Earn” under “Acquire Skill Points” to see the current Evo’s objectives. These challenges are completed simply by playing Madden NFL 27™; some objectives are simply about winning games, while others are built around that player’s position, like racking up passing yards or piling up sacks.

Evo objectives often have one of two requirements, the first - and most common caveat - is having the Evo Player Item in your lineup. In this case, even if they are a substitute for their position, the Player Item must be in your lineup in order to progress the objective. The other, more limited requirement is performing the objective “with” that Player Item. For example, a given Evo may require “touchdowns with” an Evo’d Player Item, meaning the objective will only progress if - and only if - that Evo’d Player Item scores a tuddy.

Skill Points: Upgrades and Refunds

After earning Skill Points, head back into the “Upgrades” menu to see options for spending Skill Points. 

When spending Skill Points, you have the ability to “refund” them using Coins if you do not like changes made to your Player Item. There is a fixed rate of Coin cost per Skill Point (at Madden NFL 27 launch, this is 150 Coins to 1 Skill Point), so as the number of Skill Points used increases, so does the cost of refund.

Be sure you want to make a Refund given those costs, but know that by simply playing MUT, more Coins can be earned.

Evo Chains

An advanced Evo technique is “Chaining” Evos, or using multiple Evos on a single Player Item. This can be great when wanting multiple upgrades on a player, such as a higher max OVR and additional Chemistries. 

Evo Chains only happen when an Evo is considered “chainable,” meaning that another Evo can be put on that Player Item. For example, if the Store has a “84 OVR Evo Blueprint,” which requires an eligible Player Item at 82 or 83 OVR, and also a “83 OVR Evo Blueprint,” you can first use the 83 OVR Evo Blueprint to get a Player Item up to the threshold for the 84 OVR Evo Blueprint.

Five Tips for Evos

1. KNOW YOUR EVO. Some Evos cannot be removed  once applied, so make sure to confirm these potential limits before using one.
2. DESIGNATE A CAPTAIN. The free Ultimate Captain Evo scales its OVR maximum throughout the year, so apply it to a Player Item you may want to carry into the future.
3. CONSULT YOUR OBJECTIVES. Objectives may require a Player Item to be in your lineup - or tally up specific stats in-game - in order to earn Skill Points for their Evo.
4. YOUR SKILL POINTS, YOUR TERMS. Coins can be used to refund Skill Points after they are earned and used on an Evo.
5. EVO CHAINING. Check to see if an Evo is chainable, which can unlock more Evo opportunities to further change your Player Item.
