Developer Q&A: Ryan Vaughan, Producer for The Sims Studio

We unveiled The Sims 4 at our gamescom press briefing – to give you an insider’s look, we sat down with producer Ryan Vaughn to tell us a little more about this PC favorite and what the Sims team will be doing this week here at gamescom.

Q: What is the biggest difference in The Sims 4 compared to The Sims 3?

A: It all starts with the biggest innovation in The Sims 4, the Sims themselves. Our Sims have evolved into emotionally aware beings whose every action is affected by what they’re thinking and how they’re feeling. Now you get to play with the mind, body and heart of the Sims.

Our second big feature is a new set of technologies we’re calling SmartSim. This has allowed us to make the most intelligent and relatable life simulation ever.

And finally, we’ve completely rebuilt our creative tools to be more intuitive, more powerful, and much more fun to play with. For the first time you reach into the world and shape your Sims by hand and build your homes room-by-room with ease.

You’re going to be able to see this in action during The Sims Live Broadcast so check it out! [Airs at 8am Pacific on Thursday, August 22 at www.TheSims.com/live]

Q: Sims have now been around for over a decade. How do you keep it interesting for (very passionate!) fans?

A: It’s funny you ask that, because it’s actually the fans that continue to drive our excitement about The Sims. It is their undying passion that energizes us, and their continued devotion that inspires us to create the kinds of games and content that we want to play. We’re constantly surfing the forums, checking in with them on Twitter via our @SimGuru accounts and looking for their feedback so that we can deliver the experiences they’re looking for. Keep it up, guys, we’re listening!

Q: So, what’s going on at SimsCamp this week? Tell us more!

A: We’ve invited top fans of The Sims from around the world to converge at SimsCamp to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at The Sims 4. In addition to being amongst the first people in the world to play with Create A Sim, they’re the first to go behind the curtain to see how all of the pieces of our game come together.

Q: What is the feature you’ve waited for the most to show off while at gamescom?

A: The Sims themselves. These are revolutionary new Sims with emotional centers that behave and react more naturally than ever before. Every one of their actions is affected by their emotional states that lead to richer, more meaningful gameplay.

Q: How long have you been a Simmer yourself and what makes you love this franchise?

A: I started working on The Sims in 2007 when I was lucky enough to land on The Sims 2 team, but I’ve been a Simmer since the beginning. My favorite part about The Sims is that it’s a blank canvas. We give players all of these creative tools and they use them to tell their own unique stories.

For me, I love to build homes. So it actually really excites me that we’ve completely revamped our Build tool. It has all of the power that I want, but it’s tactile and flexible so that I can make great homes with ease.

They've taken away Create-A-Style.... I have no idea how they're claiming that Create-A-Sim is "more powerful, intuitive, and fun"... Totally bummed out. :(

That doesnt mean there isnt something outside the game that can be done or something else in the game. It just means that you cant put a say wood print on a shirt. there are still color options. CC will eventually break threw this and change it. and they say its more power full in Create a Sim meaning you have more control over the sims body. Things change just cause CASt isnt there now doesnt mean the whole game is a bust.

I'm disappointed! I was hoping they would go for more realistic looking sims (than in previous versions), but instead it's this cartoony style... Really disappointed.

I love the Sims but i really think if they made the Sims 4 a little more realistic and allowed us to have more control over our Sims and their world they would hit the nail right on the head. i would love to be able to see our Sims actually go to work and interact with others while working. it would be awesome if we could have to option to pursue a self-employed career. like the sims 2 open for business. it would love to see more career options. you need to incorporate sims 2 and 3 intosims4

by making things a little more realistic i mean... for example in the sims 3 if you drive your car to a venue or something when you get there the car automatically just appears in its spot???? in the sims 2 they would do the whole process of getting into a car like a human would and parking it. it would be cool if sims have to get their license at driving school in order to drive. what about include random events like car crashes? the better the car the more chance the sim has of surviving?

hey I like you idea... I agree =) even though having the crashes are a bit scaryyy because I would not want like my sim to die in a crash.

I have loved Sims for thee longest time, BUT I REALLY REALLYYYYY hope to see, in the Sims 4, is customization for height- there is always body customization but never height. I feel that I can never truly make myself or people I know because Sims characters are always the same ht. =(

I agree! That's the biggest change I would like to see and one of the only things the Sims 3 lacks, I'm not sure if it's even worth it to buy a new Sims 4 when it honestly doesn't seem that different

Change sims body, and what to do with the construction - can do everything mode. I find really great. Great work. The thing that bothers me is the range for colorize and use patterns. That this should fall away. I ask you dear team, hollt the new items into the new Sims 4th Whether publication or an expansion pack later on I do not care. The main thing it comes back with pure. About what I would be still a farm with many other animals. And also babies can get. As in a real farm. Of course, the 4

As in a real farm. Of course, the 4 seasons, and where you can run a business myself again. These are my wishes for Sims 4

i bought the sim 4 deluxe and i'm super happy about it. the waiting is eating me alive though!!! i'm into the cartoon'ish look it has, it's awesome. ive been playng the sims 3 and hoping that the 4 kicks it right in the rear with more accuracy and realistic interactions for the longest. and i too hope that we can see our sims do everything and not just disappear into a building or magically appear in their car. i hope the clothes design look real not painted on!!!! and that tattoos look clear and not all blurry!!!!!!! super excited for the 4!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i hope EA keeps create a style, everyone needs to be unique and that's one way of doing it.

I like the sims 4... I am most excited 4 create a sim and sure maybe create a style won't be there but who know they have another year to fix or maybe redesign a different form of create a style :) I luv the create a sim can't wait 4 the sims 4 I'm gonna totally be playing the whole day when I get it ( even if I have school I'll find a way ) I just love how it looks I love the cartoony / realistic meets look ... It doesn't make them look 2 realist like in the sims 3 :)

If you plan to port this to the Consoles as you have for every other sims game. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it split screen multiplayer! You did it with one of your older sim games and it was my favorite game from the sims franchise. Counting on you guys! Don't let me down please!

Yah this would be great, that and an online community?? Interac with other ppl from the real world using Sims. Actually chat on the computer with your sim to other ppls (sims). Bringing real ppl into it would keep the game from drying up.

I love the Sims 3 so much, I played it until I played only for the sake of designing houses, love how easy it is to build and create a house. It'd be really nice if they added an L-staircase as well. Definitely loved the realistic look of the Sims 3, especially in the houses, hope they carry that on. Also hope for a wide variety of objects that I can decorate the interior with. Would definitely buy The Sims 4 if there is amazing designing capabilities that surpass that of TS3.
