Electronic Arts Launches Origin

We promised to bring you all the latest news of EA and today we’ve got a major announcement to share. I’ve been lucky enough to watch the progress on this from behind-the-scenes for months and I’m thrilled to be able to unveil EA’s newest brand to you today – Origin is here!

With Origin you will get access to the best content EA has to offer, across multiple platforms, anytime you want. Origin will also help you stay connected with your friends in our growing online community.  And later this year, Origin will be the destination where you can purchase and download highly-anticipated EA games, including Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12.

www.origin.com is your new destination for browsing, buying, downloading and playing your favorite games. You’ll get the best content from EA – on a PC or a mobile device – directly from Origin.  At launch, you’ll be able to set up an Origin account and immediately connect with your friends.

Also launching today is the Origin beta application.  Available for download at www.origin.com, the Origin beta is a desktop application that will be your direct connection to the best content from EA and offer the ability to create and manage your own personal community of gamers.  Through the Origin application, users will be able to find and connect with friends, see what they are playing, and digitally download and play PC games straight from EA.

With Origin, you’ll no longer have to constantly swap out discs or shuffle through stacks of games – everything will be available right in your account. Even if you buy a new computer or are away from your home, you’ll always be able to play your favorite EA games with Origin.

Origin will also be available on the go with a mobile platform that gives you access to your profile and lets you connect and play with friends in EA’s leading smartphone titles, including SCRABBLE and the upcoming mobile version of Battlefield 3.  In the future, mobile gamers will also be able to see which games their friends are playing, as well as compare high scores and compete for bragging rights.

After EA’s press conference next week at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, you’ll also be able to access exclusive game content and trailers for Mass Effect 3, FIFA 12, SSX, Need for Speed: The Run, STAR WARS: The Old Republic, The Sims 3 and Battlefield 3. EA’s E3 press conference is scheduled for 12:30PM PST on June 6, 2011. Be sure to watch the live stream right here on EA.com.

See you there!

If your special edition games don't come out on Steam I'm not buying your games. There's 0% chance I'm gonna make another account on a digital distribution service, two is already enough. Are we still gonna be able to buy our games (including special edition) on Steam?

You're already posting from an EA account, so what's the problem?

I don't use them for digital distribution. I can't download games I already own from them, if I want to I have to repurchase them. I have my games centralized in two different locations, I'd have to get a third if I started buying from EA. There are lots of problems, want more examples?

Having been through the nightmares of EADM ill definitely take my *** to the store and buy the game. If this new service is anything like EADM i want to skip the Horrible customer service nightmares that EA brings.

Have you considered Valve's Steam platform instead? They have amazing deals and allow you to keep all of your games together in one service.

To make this project successful EA need to price new releases at no more than £20 (for the UK at least). Seeing games priced at £30/35 new on EA Store and Steam is just madness. I'm never, ever, going to buy any game at such a price. I pay no more than £20 for my games. No matter the title. You can get new releases cheaper at Retail, which defeats the whole point of Digital Distribution as you have no disc, no printed manual, distribution cost, etc. It's just pure greed by the publishers.

I dont understand how.. when EA doesnt have to print or burn disks.. the price is still the same, so.. they do less work and we pay them more?

Meh. I'll go back to buying games at retail stores than switch to another DD service. I use Steam because its more convenient, has a larger library, with unified features across *all* my games. I was on the fence with The Old Republic before, this only hurts the chances that I eventually buy it.

Meh its already failed if it thinks to compete with steam, one simple reason why, because steam supports all regions to buy from unlike EA where we from Montenegro and Serbia for example still cant buy any game from EA.

Why confuse matter, everyone wants a unified platform for all publishers, which already exists in steam. You want a bigger cut you say? Well then work more closely with steam to get what you want, but the likelyhood of steam users going to another service is 0.

"EA's newest brand". YIPPEE! Customers don't speak marketese, and it makes some of us retch. As does the forced, repeated use of the word "Origin" in your release. Oops now I've done it! I'm sure we're all so excited to be forced to use a service that offers LESS than the competition (Steam etc.). As more and more systems are geared towards openness and integration, EA rolls out what is sure to be a walled garden to serve their greedy purposes and further exploit the customers.

At least let us activate our older EA games with CD keys. A lot are even available in the store, don't get why they can't be activated.
