    What is markerless motion capture?

    Nigel Nunn, Senior Motion Capture Manager at EA Create Capture, has spent years working at the intersection of performance and technology, helping translate real human movement into the moments players feel on screen.

    Now, with markerless technology moving into production-level activities, that process is opening up in entirely new ways to capture that authentic experience.

    “With traditional motion capture, you’re confined to a studio and you have to wear suits with markers all over your body. With markerless motion capture, it’s tracking a human body, so it’s trained on being able to identify a body, and it tracks the features of a body,” says Nigel.

    Instead of building performances around the limitations of a studio, Nigel and his team can now follow the performance itself, wherever it happens. Using high-resolution, high-speed video cameras combined with AI and computer vision, teams can capture motion across much larger, more dynamic spaces. 

    “With markerless motion capture, we can go to the people. We can set up indoors or outdoors. The versatility is there,” Nigel says.

    For teams on the ground, that shift is immediate. Setup becomes faster, and constraints fall away.

    “Fewer cameras, no requirements on suits, you can pretty much take it anywhere and do mocap within minutes if you want to,” says Nigel.
