Ultimate Team Newsletter September 10, 2021

The season-long, weekly blueprint to navigating Ultimate Team updates, breakdowns, walkthroughs and releases.

Madden NFL 22

Happy Friday, MUT fam! TJ aka The Young Alge Crumpler here for another week of MUT recaps, releases and general ramblings.

Football is officially back. Wow, that feels so good to say. Growing up, Madden went hand-in-hand with NFL Sundays for my friends and me. At halftime, we’d fire it up and see how many three-minute quarter games we could fit in before the third quarter. Madden and MUT are year-round entertainment, but in the thick of football season, something about it fits like a glove.

As always, here’s a breakdown of what you’ll find in this week’s MUT Newsletter:

  • MUT Walkthrough: My Favorite Challenges
  • Release Recap
  • Superstar KO Reward
  • Wildcard Wednesday: Veterans
  • LTD’s
  • Ultimate Kickoff Program
  • Quick Hitter: MCS Ultimate Kickoff
  • Legends Reveal
  • TJ’s Top 5: Fastest CBs
  • Creator Content of The Week

MUT Walkthrough: My Favorite Challenges

If you’re a beginner-level MUT player, you might be intimidated by the number of clickable touch points on your screen. I know I was. My best advice would be to click anything you see. Allow the game to do what the game does best, and steer you in the right direction. Soon, you’ll get familiar with the challenges you find most enjoyable and rewarding.

When I was earning my stripes, I loved “The Campaign,” and still do, for that matter. It feels like MUT’s bread and butter. You’re matched up against the computer, completing challenges such as “Pass for 10 yards on this play,” and eventually “Win the game.” The Campaign is a fantastic way to get low-stakes reps in and earn coins, training and item packs. Completing a full season under “The Campaign” will help you earn you a solid squad and aptly show you the ropes.

Release Recap

Superstar KO Campus Legends Reward:

Joe Haden (CB, 85 OVR)

·       Earn by recording 3 Sacks in Superstar KO

Wildcard Wednesday: Veterans

  • Joe Haden (CB, 88 OVR)
    • If fast cornerbacks are the name of the game, Joe Haden’s a rock-solid option for your team. He’s rocking an 87 speed combined with an 88 man coverage and 86 zone coverage. TJ Watt rushing the QB might help him out in games, but he’s no slouch in coverage!
  • Jamie Collins (LOLB, 88 OVR)
    • Collins is a versatile piece you can add to any defense. His 85 speed makes him passable if you want to throw him on a flat zone in coverage, but his 85 block shedding is a weapon when getting to the quarterback and defending the run.
  • Sammy Watkins (WR, 88 OVR)
    • A few things in life are guaranteed: Death, taxes and Sammy Watkins scoring a touchdown in week one of the regular season. My fellow fantasy football players know it! His 88 speed and 89 deep route running make him a lethal weapon stretching the field.
  • Jimmy Graham (TE, 89 OVR)
    • Saying prime Jimmy Graham was fun to watch is the understatement of the century, and I’m a lifelong Atlanta Falcons fan! If I can admit that, anyone can. Now, we get another chance to play with prime Graham. Part of the reason he was so electric was because of his athleticism, and this card does him justice. He comes in with an impressive 87 speed and 91 spectacular catch.
  • DJ Swearinger (FS, 88 OVR)
    • If an opponent runs into DJ Swearinger without protecting the football, he’s going to make you pay. His 90 acceleration and 89 hit power will make ball carriers wish they sat that play out. He’s also rocking an 87 zone coverage which means he can be used all over the field. I’m looking forward to making Swearinger a linebacker in a sub package.

Legends Reveal

Jerry Rice (WR, 92 OVR)

So you like Wide Receivers, huh? How about the greatest of all time? Some say all records are meant to be broken, but I’m not so sure about Rice’s. In 19 NFL seasons, Rice totaled 22,895 receiving yards. That’s over 5,000 yards more than the legend in second (Larry Fitzgerald). Mississippi Valley State University’s finest, Rice played with the 49ers, Raiders and ended his career with a brief stint on the Seahawks. This Rice item has a 92 speed and 91 spectacular catch and is sure to make your passing attack formidable. I don’t want to be the opponent going up against the player who earned this Rice item AND the Tyreek Hill MCS item.

Mike Haynes (CB, 92 OVR)

Today’s fans may not be as familiar with defensive backs from the 70’s and 80’s as they’d like to be, but if there are a handful to keep in your mental rolodex, Haynes is one of them. The 5th overall pick in 1976 played 13 seasons with the Patriots and Raiders. In that time, he intercepted 46 passes (nearly four per season on average), recovered 14 fumbles and made nine pro bowl appearances. He also tacked on two punt return touchdowns. My favorite part about this Haynes item is that he is six feet, two inches tall and still is rocking a 91 speed. His 91s on man and zone coverage, plus a 92 press coverage… yeah, I think that will work just fine.  If you’re looking for me, you can find me sipping a coconut drink by the ocean on Haynes island.

TJ’s Top 5: Fastest CBs

Shoutout to the GOAT over at Mut.GG for the suggestion for this week’s top five! 12 cornerbacks have speed ratings between 88-90, so I’ll be picking my five favorites for playing purposes!

5. Deion Sanders (88 SPD, 85 OVR, NAT, MUT22 Reward)

Sanders’ second ability slot seals the deal when compared to other CBs with 88 SPD. Primetime is also, of course, a weapon in the return game.

4. Phillip Buchanon (89 SPD, 89 OVR, Campus Heroes)

This Buchanon item is one of the most complete CBs in MUT. There’s no discernable weakness. 88 change of direction, 87 man coverage, 86 press coverage, 86 awareness and he’s still 5’11 which isn’t even close to short for a CB.

3. Darrelle Revis (89 SPD, 89 OVR, Legends Boss Edition)

Take Buchanon’s speed and and physicality, now add points to the coverage attributes. Revis comes in with 88 man and zone coverage ratings, and an 89 press. This item is one of the most formidable CBs in the game.

2. Donte Jackson (90 SPD, 84 OVR, Superstars Elite)

Keep in mind, this list is “Fastest” CBs, not “Best” CBs. Jacksons’ athleticism in this card is off the charts. The 90 speed is an asset and he’s rocking a 90 jumping, 89 agility and 87 change of direction to boot. The coverage isn’t stellar, with 79 man coverage being his highest rating there, but with these attributes, Donte Jackson is likely starting on your defense at least in nickel packages.

1. Antrel Rolle (90 SPD, 89 OVR, Campus Heroes)

*Chef’s kiss* This item is a thing of beauty. The 90 speed is phenomenal, tied for the fastest CB in MUT, but the 87 man coverage and insane catching, yes, catching abilities are beastly. This Rolle item has a 75 catching and 77 catch in traffic rating. You could exchange Rolle in a set to earn Champion Reggie Bush, or you could keep him in your lineup and watch the turnovers unfold before your eyes.
