Criterion Games Holds Student Day in Guildford
2014-10-29

"We want to inspire the next generation of game makers.” – Matt Webster, GM Criterion Games
That’s a bold statement, but one that the team at Criterion Games in Guildford, UK feel very passionate about.
For the past two years, Criterion has been inviting students to the inner sanctum of one of the world’s leading game development studios, to inspire students and advise them on what it takes to get into our industry.
“This is such a diverse industry with so much talent across the globe within both development and publishing, and we want to do our bit to help promote what we feel is the best business you could ever work in,” says Matt Webster, GM Criterion Games. “We want to inspire the next generation of game makers, and hopefully help them on their path into gaming.”
Criterion has held similar events with college and university students before, but this event in late October marked the first time they opened their doors to high school students and their guardians.
The day was packed with information on the studio, the industry as a whole and the different career paths that exist in gaming. The day ended with a challenge: come up with a prototype game.

The day-long competition left many of the teams excited and nervous as they churned out mini-plans for their games.
The winners were Joshua Jones, Starsky Torchia, Teddy Stevenson, William Hamilton and William Hartley, who were mentored by Arthur Rohart, Designer at Criterion (shown above). The team created a game called "Lights. Camera. Destruction."
Movie fans customising their favourite moments in a fun filled action packed game of total destruction was how the team described their game. Congrats, team!
