Legends of New York: Yippe Kay Yay

Eduardo Vasconcellos

2011-02-16

In which we look at how one man can change a city.

Jumping off skyscrapers, being shot out of a drainage pipe in Central Park, and destroying a F-35 jet with his bare hands are just in a day’s work for this legend of New York, Detective Lieutenant John McClane.

Made famous by Bruce Willis’ portrayal of this everyman New York police officer in Die Hard, John McClane first shook new ground in 1988 when he traveled to Los Angeles to spend his holidays with his children and estranged wife. He agreed to attend his ex-wife’s company Christmas party as her date, but as he quickly finds out, he should have stayed in New York. Moments after arriving at the party, a highly trained group of mercenaries crash the shindig, led by international thief Hans Gruber, who was looking to steal millions of dollars worth of bearer bonds, and they were willing to use lethal force indiscriminately to achieve their goal. Even though the Los Angeles Police Department arrived on scene with an entire army of officers, federal agents, and heavy armor, the safety of civilians and the diffusion of the entire ordeal came down to a single man: John McClane. Through his selfless and heroic actions, he marked the beginning of an explosive career.

Since then, Detective McClane has foiled the plans of the younger of the Gruber brothers Simon, who wanted vengeance for the death of his sibling. John has also faced off with a team of former U.S. Army Special Forces seeking to free a jailed dictator, and more recently, has gone toe to toe with a team of cyber-terrorists trying to cripple America beyond repair. Needless to say, this police officer didn’t leave too many survivors after their tussles, despite the mountain of paperwork he faced as a result. It’s all in a day’s work for this humble detective.

Just imagine what he could do with a Nanosuit.
