Mastering the Revamped R&D Upgrades System

Learn the ins and outs on how to set up your own F1 car for glory

F1 2021 Header

As part of the 2021 Season Update for F1® Mobile Racing, available now on iOS and Android, we introduced a revamped system that allows you to mechanically set up your very own F1® car.

With our new R&D system, not only can you adjust your car’s performance to suit your racing style; you can gradually increase its ability by earning new and better parts through competing in races. As you rise through the ranks, you’ll also build your ultimate F1® machine, carefully crafted the way you like it.

F1® Mobile Racing's new R&D layout allows you to develop more individual components for your car, as well as improving the chassis part of your machine. Knowing how to earn these parts, and how to create great setups with them, will be key to your success...

EXPLAINING F1® MOBILE RACING’S PI RANKING SYSTEM

Before we dive into the technical side of things, let's explain the PI (or Performance Indicator) ranking system. Your car will be given a rating based on several performance elements, which are combined to give the car a PI score. This number will change as you make changes to your R&D setup.

Each base car, including the 2021 Technical Regulation car (or 2021 TR Car for short) which you can visually customise, has a different base performance and PI. As you earn and develop new parts, your car’s PI score will increase, giving you an indication of how well your car stacks up against your competitors.

HOW F1® MOBILE RACING’S NEW R&D SYSTEM WORKS

A brand-new element of the R&D system is the ability to spend in-game earned currency improve the chassis parts of the cars you already own*. You can choose to increase its level to improve overall performance, or target specific parts to improve via focused R&D, helping boost your car’s PI.

Improving the chassis part will increase the amount of PI the chassis part has, which will in turn boost the car's performance. As you develop and upgrade your car’s chassis part, more slots on your R&D ‘deck’ will become available for you. The deck is where you equip parts for your car - so the more deck slots you have available, the greater the maximum PI of your car.

The chassis part changes depending on your selected chassis, and each team’s chassis part is different, offering unique stats, bonuses, and PI values. This allows for different combinations of parts, with space for up to 11 unique setups, which you can customise to suit a certain driving style or a type of circuit – more Power parts for tracks with long straights, for example.

Each car has its own unique chassis (including the 2021 TR Car) and a unique combination of parts on its base setup configuration that determine its PI value. Some chassis may offer more Power-related parts, while others may offer more Handling parts, and so on. You can equip one type of part in each individual appropriate slot, whilst more R&D slots will be unlocked by levelling up your car chassis.

HOW TO EARN R&D PARTS IN F1® MOBILE RACING

Gaining new R&D parts for your car is achieved via earning boxes throughout the game. Each type of box has differing potential for including parts of different rarities. Players will be able to see the number of parts per rarity they will receive, but not the exact parts in the box. These boxes will be earned as you win races and progress through multiple areas of F1® Mobile Racing. Rank high in global Events, reach the top Leagues in Duels, and complete special challenges to earn more and better boxes.

Boxes are also purchasable from the in-game store, with free boxes and special offers regularly available.

HOW TO EQUIP R&D PARTS

Every time you earn a new part, it will be added to your Setup inventory. To equip these parts, visit the Setup menu and select which parts you want to install and, if you wish, upgrade.

Keep trying different combinations of parts to max out your PI, or find a setup that best suits your style of racing. Just like in the real world of F1®, different circuits may also be better suited to different types of setup. Your R&D configuration can also be changed after any race or event, so keep tweaking this to find combinations that give you the best chance of success.

Mastering the revamped R&D system for F1® Mobile Racing is key to establishing yourself as a dominant racer. Keep winning races, earning boxes, upgrading parts, and creating new setups to create a machine that’s a match for anyone on the track.
