Having gone through one of the most memorable playoff runs in recent history, the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings begin the 2013 NHL Season at home against the Chicago Blackhawks. As Kings’ fans look on, their team’s first ever Stanley Cup Banner will be raised to the rafters of the Staples Center, joining the plethora of LA Lakers NBA Championship Banners already hanging. If the Kings have it their way, that banner will represent the first of many. Yet, in a shortened season, it’s anyone’s game and every team is hungry for Lord Stanley’s Cup. Watch the Blackhawks take on the Kings on Saturday, January 19th at 12:00pm PT/3:00pm ET.

Box Score

It’s always fun to play spoiler and the Chicago Blackhawks did just that as they take the game 2-1 in overtime. This was a tight contest from the get-go, with no scoring until Blackhawk Center, David Bolland opening goal in the 3rd period. Less than a minute later, Justin Williams would reply for the Kings to keep the game tied and forcing overtime. In the extra frame, it was Blackhawks Winger, Patrick Sharp who would score the deciding goal and sour the banner raising festivities.

Three Stars

Goal scorers Patrick Sharp and David Bolland earned Second and Third Star honors, respectively, each finishing the game with a goal and an assist. Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford takes First Star as he lead the Hawks to a victory with a sparkling .971 SV%.
