Top 5 Rookies

As first-year players prep for their debut pro campaign, see which rookies are tops in their class according to Madden.

Madden NFL 20 Ratings

Last season, some of the top NFL prospects on both offense and defense, like New York Giants HB Saquon Barkley and Los Angeles Chargers SS Derwin James, kicked-off their rookie Madden campaigns with 82 and 80 OVRs respectively. It’s a reality check for young players as they transition from being top-shelf college talent to an environment where they’ll need to earn their stripes, err, Madden ratings, at the NFL level.

Of course, most rookies believe they deserve 99 OVRs as soon as they enter the league, but high Madden ratings aren’t just handed out. They must be earned. As rookies, both Barkley and James made an immediate impact in reality and became game-changers in Madden. Both rose up the ratings ranks with stellar rookie campaigns, clocking 88 and 87 OVRs by seasons’ end.

Perhaps one of the best examples of how performance on the real NFL field results in a higher Madden rating is Denver Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay. He commenced last season with a 69 OVR. As a result of his consistent success and efficiency running the ball (he closed his rookie year with a 192/1,037/9 line and a league-leading 5.4 yards per carry average) Lindsay did enough to impress the Madden Ratings Adjustors and escaped with an 84 OVR end-of-season mark.

So, as the new rookie class gears up for their first NFL training camp and preseason, Madden 20 is here to reveal the highest-rated rookies in the game. Which first-year players do you think will evolve into  the next Superstar X-Factor

TOP 5 ROOKIES

Quinnen Williams | 80 OVR | New York Jets | DT

The third overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft is the highest-rated rookie in Madden 20 at launch. Quinnen Williams will leverage his massive 6-foot-3, 301-pound frame against opposing offensive lines. His 88 Impact Blocking rating and 89 Strength rating is a combination that opponents will be forced to respect in the middle of the trenches.

Marquise Brown | 77 OVR | Baltimore Ravens | WR

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown is a 5-foot-9, 166-pound speed demon out of Oklahoma. The deep threat drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round, Brown (cousin of Madden 19 cover athlete Antonio Brown) has drawn comparisons to speedy veteran receiver DeSean Jackson, and one NFL scout said Brown possessed “terrifying top-end speed.” Our Madden Ratings Adjustors agreed, as Brown takes over as the second-fastest WR in Madden 20 at launch, with a 97 Speed rating and 95 Acceleration. The combination of Brown and Ravens’ mobile QB Lamar Jackson should make for a highly dangerous duo on gameday, both on the sticks and in reality.

T.J. Hockenson | 77 OVR | Detroit Lions | TE

The Lions made moves at TE in the offseason, adding former Steelers TE Jesse James in free agency and drafting T.J. Hockenson as a top-10 selection. Hockenson is 6-foot-5 and enters Madden season with an 89 Jumping rating, so he’ll make an immediate impact in the red zone. The Iowa product is a dynamic pass-catcher known for his quickness and athleticism. He should slot in as Detroit’s TE1 out of the gate.

Nick Bosa | 78 OVR | San Francisco 49ers | RE

Nick Bosa has the potential to evolve into an elite edge rusher at the professional level. The Ohio State product’s strong 91 Acceleration rating combined with a 79 Finesse Move rating and 84 Hit Power rating highlight his strengths as a defender. He could be the pass-rushing piece the 49ers have been seeking for years.

Ed Oliver Jr. | 79 OVR | Buffalo Bills | DT

Another top-10 NFL Draft selection, Ed Oliver Jr. is set to make an immediate impact on the Buffalo Bills defensive front. Oliver possesses rare athleticism for a defensive lineman, evidenced by his 77 Power Moves rating combined with an 84 Pursuit rating and 86 Jumping mark.

Josh Allen | 77 OVR | Jacksonville Jaguars | LE

Josh Allen (no, not the Bills quarterback) has a diverse skillset that makes him an asset all over the field. More than just a pass-rusher, Allen’s versatility will likely lend to more playing time, and some believe he could morph into a linebacker as he develops at the NFL level. The Kentucky product has been hailed for his combination of size, speed, and explosiveness, and that’s reflected in his ratings (86 Speed, 91 Toughness, 85 Pursuit).
